Landing pages and sub domains are two different things. Try to understand the difference first.

It really depends on what you are attempting to achieve and:

    1. size (amount of pages) ,and

    2. growth potential

If size is small and not likely to grow significantly over time - then main sub-directories pages (what you noted as landing pages) is best.

If large volume then you will likely get better results out of subdomains.

If small and you are sure that growth potential will occurs (rather rapidly) over time then again subdomains are likely better to server you.

If however, growth stagnants on a smallish amount of pages 100 or less - sub-directories is the better deal since it is assumed that you will have crosslinks to and from the subdomains which can negatively affect the root -- harshly.
