If you're meaning going in search of leads, I prefer door-to-door, after going in-depth into their site. It's a lot easier to hang up a phone or delete an email than it is to close a door (especially after my panda *** is inside).
I also prefer it because I hate when people call me or send me an email trying to sell me something. Somebody actually called the number off the searchsatisfaction.com website trying to sell me "local optimization services for Search Satisfaction". I replied "Seriously?"

You know I never understood this statement actually.
As somebody starting out, you would NOT search out some of your first "potential" customers.
Not knocking your realm of thinking, as it seems almost everybody has the same theory (well at least those legit in SEO)... just curious about what you did when you first started out?

um...okay, I've gotta think back like about a decade ago to answer you...but more than that really....
at that time say 1995-2000, I was a web dev only. Wont bother this thread with the ins and outs of same, but I can say that with the web being so "new" -- SEO wasn't even on my -- or my client's -- radar....yet!
that said, about that time we had a couple of opportunities from a couple of clients to "get their websites UP" in the se world so that they'd get the folks who wanted trucks or a local lawyer or a local accountant or an automation company or a job finding site (yup, that's our first 5 clients who came at US from outta the web dev shadows!) and we said "sure, we can do that"
course, like all who get that kinda opp dropped in their lap, we had to learn the how and why and tactics to match that strategy....which (to be honest) took like almost 3 more years...sigh...but back then was pretty 'easy' to learn...we haunted the web and all various forums and sites and boards to chat (hey, anyone else remember even what CompuServe was?)...
ANYWAYS...we rose to the occasion...we DO know an opp when it knocks...and moret than that...we did okay...

Why work a company or try to find clients when you can run your own sites?
Spend zero time marketing, kissing bums, holding hands, billing, marking time sheets.... sheesh!.. etc....

Good response. Appreciated.
Interesting story as well.
To Egol's point... to each his own I suppose. I don't plan on a firm, as I said before, I have a client-base already setup from other business endeavors... but that's not to say I won't ever.
