    I use backlinkwatch dot com

It takes some time to scan but will give you an update of all backlinks it can find, anchor text used, PR of the link and if the link is flagged for no follows or not.

Looking at the meta data for keyword targetting won't help because most search engines pay little or no attention to meta keyword tags.

I would say by far the best method is to search for the kewyord and then assume everyone at the top of the results is the competition. Do what they do but more and better thus you will rank higher.

However, this tool may help you -

not all webmasters know that though. its completely logical to say webmasters will still put keywords in their meta tags.

If the site is small I would go there and check it out myself. I think that I can do a better job than a program. The program will be no better at this evaluation than the person who wrote the algo and there will be some loss in expertise due to making it automated. If the pages are important I will do better myself. I think that a tool is valuable when the site is massive or if the value of the attack is less than the value of your time.

You face competition based on keywords.

For example, you may be a site dealing with all kind of widgets.

So for the keyword "Wigets" you may have sites which do not appear when you type in "Red Widgets" or maybe "Blue widgets' in Google. So for each keyword/ keyphrase, your competition will be different (though in some cases you may find out the same site/s for more than one keyword/ keyphrase)

So the best way is to type in your Keyword in Google, check the sites that are above you in the SERP and analyze them thoroughly.

You might need the help of backlink checkers to find out from where they are getting links coz that's so much important for ranking well in Google that you just can't afford to give it a miss

    Good Luck !

The keyword tool on this site is pretty darn good. Also, doing a "view source" and reading the meta data is a pretty obvious way to take a look.

    Good Luck,
