I haven't heard of cases where Google instant effects a domain like that? Coincidence? Rankings may have dropped for another reason?

Yes, Google Instant may not be the exact reason for the dropped ranking, so it will be wrong to say that bcoz of Google instant you have lost your rankings.

It shouldn't be a result of instant. The rankings did not change with instant.. the only difference is how & when the SERP's are being presented.
