    500 Internal Server Error


    Hi Guys,

    Not sure if anyone can help?!

    If chromes is useful for anything, it certainly is for plugins! Thanks to one of the plugins I noticed the other day that my website is displaying a 500 internal server error - yet, unlike normal errors, the website is still visible to the public and everything is diplaying and working correctly?!

    ...A few days later Google Webmasters is telling me that the GoogleBots cant crawl my website (Yes, a big no no in the SEO world!)

    I know its a process of elimination, but im not sure how to get the error removed before we start losing rankings? I noticed this morning that the sitemap.xml URl was wrong in WMT, once corrected, would this fix the issue and its a case of just waiting?

    Its built in Magento and the website URL is aspinline(dot)co(dot)uk.

    Is anyone else getting this issue or know of any things i need to check to get this resolved asap?

    Robots is definitely INDEX,FOLLOW

    Mostly (from my experience) is caused by editing htaccess. If rule is not available on server (rule is switched off), it causes 500. I got that when trying to optimize pagespeed or cache. Note that on the other server it could work perfectly. Look on server settings (php.ini, httpd.conf, apache...) or ask server admin for help.

    Thanks for the quick reply faktorbiz , I dont have access to the htaccess file but i've asked a member of the team. The last time these files were updated was in Feb. :/

    Any further ideas...?

    But You don't know the first time error 500 was found by You? Could be from feb.
    Check pages giving error 500. Are they a product pages? Static? Widgets?

    First 500 error was present last week - 8th May ]
    Pages throwing 500 errors - Product Pages, Categories, Sub Categories, Generics - such as customer login page, and even the homepage!

    Think we've fixed it now!

    It was something to do with the coding on the category pages to hide duplicate content in the template which wasnt necessary on each page!

    Not a problem but duplicate page means also copying content from supplier. I know that problem especially in eshops but there're ways to lower it. If Your content is hand written - that's good but if came from supplier... better to rewrite it. With content copied it's harder (much) to get better serps.

    Duplicate content - For a "Pantone Matcher" feature for customers... contained lots of numbers!! All content is hand written as they are manufacturers so are their own original suppliers themselves thanks for the heads up!

    Just to add to the thread although it looks like this particular problem is solved:

    There are two reasons I've uncovered so far as to why Chrome, Safari and IE might return a 500 error while Firefox seems to work happily enough:

    - Encoding - if your page is not encoded 'UTF-8 without BOM'.
    - Calling non-existant session variables - if your code (somewhere) looks for a session variable when no session has been started.
