There are many things which you need to remember while creating the Title of any webpage. Let me share with you some of them which might be useful for ranking well in the Search Engine Result Pages.
1.Include your targeted keywords in the Title. Do not leave the title tag empty or don't just write your company name in the title. Instead include your targeted keywords for the page and then write your company name, if you want to. Let's assume my company name is ABCMarketing, Inc and I sell Internet Marketing Ebooks. So I would keep the title of my homepage as “ Internet Marketing Ebooks” or “Internet Marketing Ebooks from ABCMarketing, Inc” Try to keep your targeted keywords at the very first of the Title. 2.Try to limit the length of your title within 60-65 characters. Remember the least amount of words you place in the title, the more weight Google will give to each of the keywords and the higher you will rank. 3.Keep unique titles for each page. Don't use same titles for multiple pages or else your titles will be competing against each other, diluting each other's impact. 4.Avoid using unnecessary words in the Title such as “and”,”from” etc. These are most commonly used words and therefore search engines don't take such words into account while they produce search results. Such words don't do any good but on the contrary eat away valuable space from your title. 5.Try to create a title which contains your targeted keywords, at least once and no more than 3 times and at the same time is a bit different and more appealing than those of your competitors. Such a way you will not only rank higher in the search results but will also have a good Click-Thru-Rate as the unique title will make your page stand out from the rest and attract more visitors. Remember, while using search engines, people click on links that appeal to them. I feel that these things will help you make a great Search Engine friendly title and will help you attain a higher position in the SERPs. What do u guys say? |

I think you've summarised it quite nicely
Maybe my titles would be a bit different from yours, but that's just picking on details. For example, I don't like to mention my keyword even more than once. Also, for readability's sake, I'm not afraid to add the odd "stopper" word like "and" and "that" etc. But your rules are clear. Most often, the details are a matter of personal preference rather than SEO power anyway.... Kudos. |

2 CAVEATS:
1. NEVER repeat any words in title [and no real need to stem words either] 2. 1st 30 characters are most important, last 30 or so add very little to ordered ranks - therefore entice ranks [1st 30] entice clicks [latter 30] |

Try to keep the number of keywords as few as possible. More keywords can water each other's weight down. Spread the keywords into different page titles.
As to the company's name, I always put it in "contact us" page, or "office location" page. They serve little purpose in SEO unless your company is well-knonw.

Great tips Fathom, but could you please explain the first point. Why we should not repeat the same keyword in the title? Is it a flaw to put a same keyword twice? And please explain the stemming part as well. I'll b very thankful. Thanks a lot in advance ! |

I may be wrong about this but
stuffing your title tag with repetitive keywords may be picked up as keyword stuffing and you will actaully be penalized by google for this practice. Also a title tag is what shows up as the title on your webiste so keep it simple and nice to read and thus click on. This helps keep it from looking like spam. |

You have limited space [characters] to start with so you don't have the luxury of duplicating words [normally done to keep 'order-of-words']. Additionally, more word dilute the value of all words therefore while 2 uses might seem to be a benefit it is actually decreases you ranking value [in some incidences] Also as all 3 major search engine stem words e.g. search, searches, searched, searching ...you should avoid using repetitiveness - and focus more on user appeal. While a query for "searching" will have the best ordered ranked match of "searching" a use of "search" will not lose much [particularly if offsite links use "searching". Professional SEO is a game of give & take... the end goal is not just to rank better but also create an appealing listing to gain clicks so you have a chance of sales... you can over-optimization to the point of looking 'spammy' and even with #1 results... you can make searchers click on #2. |

You don't actually attract a penalty you merely dilute the value of the 1st word/phrase occurrence by using the second. In the end you create no additional value [beyond using once] and reduce the effectiveness to rank for other terms that are less competitive. |

hmmm... I could say Rand copied my work [same thing different words] but since I've known Rand long before being any good at SEO, I would say that for anyone with a couple of SEO years Title Stuff is Common Dog. Nonetheless these two posts IMHO are original... I would think Rand would say the same thing. |

I think Google and the rest are getting better of treating the whole tag as worthy (beyond 30 words). For many keywords I'm ranked based on two keywords separated in the title tag by 30 characters......
