The DMOZ Directory: Get Your Site Listed
The DMOZ Directory: Get Your Site Listed
"The Open Directory Project, also called the ODP or DMOZ, is probably the single most important internet directory. Its listings are used by Google, and by many other search engines and directories large and small, all over the internet. Everyone talks about getting their site listed in DMOZ, but not everyone knows what to do about it. Here's some help." Discuss the article in this thread. You can read the article here . |

I'm Wayne Hurlbert, the author of the DMOZ article.
The DMOZ directory, and how to be listed in its pages, is one of the more commonly found questions in many message forums. Many people are not aware of the directory, and its rather stringent submission rules and regulations. The article's purpose was to simply provide a basic primer on DMOZ submissions. In that regard, I hope I accomplished my intention. The article was never designed as an "advanced" discussion of DMOZ. Experienced SEOs should already be aware of DMOZ submission procedures. The information provided was mainly for those new to the SEO field. Thanks to all who read and commented on my article. Wayne Hurlbert

I've had TONS of trouble getting any sites listed in DMOZ.
I've tried to be patient w/ submissions, but to no avail. Is DMOZ even still doing updates regularly? |

Have you left a message at the DMOZ resource zone? The editors will at least let you know htat they have your submission in the lineup for consideration. They are always updating, as volunteer editors, but many categories are overwhelmed with submissions. Many of those submissions are spammy, in the wrong category, have really hype and keyword heavy descriptions, or have some other problems. Those sites clog up the system for everyone else. Be patient and contact resource zone and see what they have to say. Wayne Hurlbert |

I have submitted two sites to DMOZ and have been waiting for about a month. I've heard you can ask about it at resource zone but many say not to do that because you'll upset them. I think it really depends on your category. Some editors will get your site in a week and others will have to wait months.

A month is barely enough time for a submission.
The standard waiting period for a DMOZ submission is from two to three months, on average. In the meantime, forget about your DMOZ submission and spend the time adding more fresh content. When the editors get around to your site, when its turn in the lineup arrives, its chances of inclusion will be much better. Keep adding those backlinks too. While they might not help you in DMOZ, they will help you in the all important SERPs. In other words, don't stress yourself over DMOZ. Spend your time adding new content and incoming links. |

DMOZ editors GGRRRR
My opinion of DMOZ is not very good. I have tried to get a clioent's site listed for years.
The site is Amazing Las Vegas. They declined the site because the hotel rooms are through an affiliate, yet there are over 400 pages of content that make up the site. Now if you take a look at the other sites in the category of http://www.dmoz.com/Regional/North_.../Travel_Guides/ there are very few that compare to the amount of information provided by Amazing Las Vegas. Just because of that one affiliate, our site was "Declined" My suggestion is to do your homework and make sure you CONFORM to their Gestapo laws before you think about submitting. Reading some of the post made by others at their forum, really led me to believe that their moderators are on a definate power trip. Just my 2 cents |
