How To Optimize Images To Increase Rankings

How To Optimize Images To Increase Rankings

If pictures are worth a thousand words to people, then they are worth zero to search engines. Simply put, search engines will not recognize images effectively that are not optimized, and if they are not optimized you might be loosing out on two things. One, screen readers that use text or speech browser might not be able to surf your website, and providing them without information might cause them to leave once they arrive.

I try to use image filenames same as my targetted keywords and also use alt tags.
Is there anything else we can do to optimize images?

Gaurav.

alt="Search Engine Chat" title="Chat" question, is htis not redundancy? Using both the alt and title on an image? I use the alt for images and title for html links generally, should I have been using both?

There is one additional thing you can do to optimize your image a bit more.

Image directory is default for most websites, but using your keyword in the directory could not hurt either. One problem is that you will be the only one that knows where the images are.

Instead of using /images/yourimage.jpg
Use your keyword in the directory - such as /keyword/keyword.jpg

Also you can either use the alt or the title or both attributes in the image file. If the title attribute is in use, then the alt tag is cancelled over preferred title attribute.

Benjamin

My images not indexed by Google, why ?

Hi

First, let me apologize for my little english !

I read some months ago this article on Seochat:
http://www.seochat.com/articles/21/page1.html
It deals with the optimisation of HTML pages for a better indexing into search engines, especially Google , of course.

These days, Google is crawling my website. During the previous crawl, my pages were already optimised but Google NEVER indexed even one image.

I noticed that some other non SEO optimised competitors have their images indexed.

I just dont know why !
Is there people having had these problems, and how could i go any further.

Here are the optimisation i made:
* images files < 20 kbytes
* file name most of time relative to image subject. sometimes using the "underscore" character to separate keywords in the filename
* width and heigth included in the "img" tag
* alt included, sometimes with the same text than the "meta description" or "meta content"
* title not used
* some images used with a "a" tag to make a clickable picture. text of the link more or less relative with the "alt" content
* images sometimes included in "tables" with the "td" tag
* images sometimes included in "div" or "p" or "span" tag with text relative to image subject

Some questions remains:
* is there a known computation model, on how google decide whether an image is to be indexed or not in "google image" ?
* is there a method to ask explicitely google to crawl a website, searching for images only ?
* some of my pages contains about 20 to 30 images, with about the same "alt" content ? does it makes google to ban all the pictures ?
* total website amount of pictures is about 2000-3000 pictures. Is it too much ?

Thanx to help and share knowledge...
Best regards

When using Google Image Search, try the following to find all indexed images for your website under a particular keyword:

site:www.yourwebsite.com keywordhere
