How to Become an SEO Professional

SEO professionals are the iconic "knowledge workers." The difference between a mediocre search engine optimizer and a true "expert" is potentially millions of hits. In talking about how to become an SEO professional I will be concentrating on defining a lone SEO consultant and won’t talk about starting an SEO company.

Good article, but I personally disagree with some points, especially about what skills are invaluable in SEO/SEM.

One of the biggest challenges in SEO is how to optimize dynamically built websites. To do this job you have to be proficient in web design and web programming, preferably on both platforms (Windows and Linux). Real SEO specialist has to have knowledge of ASP, SQL, PHP, HTML, JavaScript, XML, CSS. Without it how could you effectively communicate with developers?

SEO professional has to understand well problems of user friendly web design. You may have optimized, well ranked web site, tons of traffic to it but miss your conversion targets only because your visitors don't register and don't complete purchase due to poor customer experience. This also include knowledge of credibility problems in web design.

SEO/SEM specialist need to be proficient with major web analytics tools, know how to set up them correctly, how to tag (label) pages, how to generate and read reports, explain results to client.

SEO/SEM specialist need to be able to set up PPC campaigns for hundreds of keywords/phrases and keep PPC budget under control while getting good click-through and conversion rates.

I was doing web design for 8 years before I changed my career and become full-time SEO/SEM specialist. I've got my certificates in web programming, SEO/SEM to systemize my knowledge and have credibility in eyes of my clients and employers.

Right now I work for big company and in constant contact with sales and marketing people, developers, customer support, management and almost everybody else here. Knowledge and experience in both fields, marketing and web design/programming, makes me valuable communication channel between different departments.
