how does google compile it's image search?

I was wondering. how are google's image results constructed? i really have no idea on this. are they indexed when the site is spidered or something along those lines........?

i have never really found any articles on it

is it the alt tags?

i would appreciate it if you guys could hook me up with a link to an article on it if you don't have the time to explain

cheers
mike

The rumor is that it picks up on the alt tags and text around the image but frankly I have no idea how it goes about retrieving the images.

What's more: is google's image crawler just having a ball, or is it seriously hunting for new images? It has been on my site for weeks now, but none of my pix appear on the G Images search just yet. Not that I really care, because that won't do me any good, but it puzzles me nonetheless...

The image search doesn't update as frequently as much as the SERPs. I believe Google mentioned they were going to speed up the process soon.

You might see your images up there soon. Nothing like leached images posted all over forums eating your bandwidth ;)
