Getting an SEO Education

Unlike western medicine, SEO is mostly “self-taught.” Students read books and articles, visit SEO forums and attend conferences, and then apply what they learn to their sites. They observe the results, tweak, and repeat the cycle. Is there a better way to learn the subject?

As what you have said SEO is a self-study, the more you are expose to it, the more you will become familiar with it, and as for how you can learn the subject in other way around- your experienced is the best teacher..

The more u involve yourself into SEO and study the cases closely, the more u'll be able to learn. i dont think there is any course you can attend or book that you can read to be an expert. I believe all the experts out here have also learnt the hard way.....so keep experimenting.

A college major in 10 years? No. But I could see it becoming a minor or possibly a specialization for marketing majors at some colleges in that timeframe.

SEO is already purelyt marketing. The only reason tech guys get involved is because the tools required for great online marketing are mostly not invented yet. It's the wild west out there right now and while Google will be #1 for a long time the landscape in which they operate is going to be radically different in 10 years, and as for when we hit the singularity...well it'll all change again.
