Forums OK, guestbooks not?
I've heard rumors of a "guest book" penalty by google and possibly other search engines. Apparently this applies to indiscriminate entries in unmoderated, easily spammable cgi-style guest books, and since hearing about this I've been wary of using any kind of forum to promote my site.
This article seems to imply that forum-style posts are OK, which I'm glad to hear - but just want to double check. Thanks Larry http://explanation-guide.info - free online reference |

Hi Larry. Forum posts are good. Just be alerted to the fact that not all forums pass along PageRank or link popularity with your signature line. By routing your signature link, they do not pass any link benefit along. The link in your signature is always helpful to find you new visitors, however. My visitor logs show daily traffic from any number of forums where I post on a regular basis. Go ahead and run your own forum. It adds content to your site. A forum also helps toward achieving authority site status through the added content pages and incoming links. As for guestbooks, it's thought by many SEO professionals that Google simply ignores links from guestbooks. The links are not likely counted, although no one is 100% certain on that fact. Don't bother signing guestbooks to get link popularity. Wayne Hurlbert |

Don't let those rumours put you off, there are many other good reasons to post in forums. One forum I've regularly contributed to has led to several magazine interviews and helped to get us traffic as a result of the PR exposure in the mag. Regards, S |

Spartan.
Posting in forums has helped you become recognized by the media as an expert in your field. That's great news! By posting good quality, helpful posts, a reputation for expertise can be established. A link back to a quality site reinforces that reputation as well. Wayne Hurlbert |

I had http://CampSpeicher.com created while I was serving in Camp Speicher Iraq. Camp Speicher is just north of Tikrit City, maybe ten minutes away. I opened the site so people could share photos, and stories about their time in Iraq. I am just having a terrible time getting it going? Another site I created was http://RATEaGI.com a rating site for soldiers. While I was in Iraq I noticed other soldiers would spend their precious few minutes surfing HOTorNot.com. So I set out to give them a site of their own Can you guys give me some hints? I just dont know what I am doing wrong? |

The purpose of posting at forums is not to get link popularity, it is to get recognization from people, so for long term, it may get better result than just focusing on improve your link popularity

I could not agree more, but to me not every topic deserves an article ;-) Thinking that forum posting is a way to success is a very dangerus thought. Still if you are an active poster on a PR7 forum like SEO chat your sig links might give you a PR3 if you are lucky, but you could get the same benefit without posting by just getting one extra link :-)

Forum posting simply to get PageRank and link popukarity misses most of the entire value of forums.
The link to your site should be considered more as an advertisement, to attract a few visitors. To think only of PageRank or link popularity is rather narrow thinking, in my opinion. First and foremost, a forum poster should be there to answer questions and to help others. As one develops a reputation for helpful and polite answers, the poster will gain the respect of peers on the message board. By gaining an enhanced reputation in your area of interest, it goes a long way toward helping your business become a success. That is more important than a sliver of PageRank. Wayne Hurlbert |
