What is the one thing that search engine users and spiders are looking for? CONTENT! Content is what people want to see, so why do people fill their sites with pointless bandwidth-intensive graphics? People search the web to find information, which is normally in textual form. Providing good quality, relevant content should be the number one SEO technique as it has a huge effect on search engine rankings, yet it is often overlooked!

I wish content was king, but I think inbound link text plays a greater role in Google right now. However, content seems to be more important in Yahoo and MSN, which is a good sign.

Link text makes the visible effect, but there are some seo practices which may not have a direct effect, but pay off tremendoulsy in the long run. Content is one of them. Besides, after the size of the website and the PR began to matter, content could have some visible effect as well. More content, more pages, more inbound links, more PR, more link text, better site thematically site... see, there are so many ways content can affect seo in.

I think content really does matter both for Google and others, it certainly seems to benefit sites with a forum or other source of diverse content.
