Two Tagging Benefits
There are two main reasons to do this.
In certain metrics programs (not Google Analytics, I recommend the LevelTen Hitcoutner) this allows you to see what the actual query string that was typed in, and what ad Google decided to show if you tag your ad correctly.
The second benefit is, if you are using multiple platforms of ppc such as Yahoo! Search Marketing and MSN adCenter, you are able to see which search engine the click came from, which campaign, and which keyword.
Where to Tag, how to Tag
On your destination URL (not display), you can tag your ad. The best way to do it is in a way that you understand and gives you the most information possible. Ideally you should have a unique tag for every keyword, campaign, adgroup, even ad (if you are a/b split testing).
Example Tagged Destination URL
www.yoursite.com?source=PPCplatform_CampaignName_G roupName_Keyword_ad1
(take out the space between the capital "G" and "r," for some reason SEO Chat wouldn't let me fix it).
or said in a different way
www.yoursite.com?source=PPCgoogle_NewDeliGeotarget _BlueWidgets_custom_blue_widgets_ad1
There are many tools out there that will tag ad automatically, but you have to make sure you understand the naming convention. If you do not have a enormous account, I recommend getting the AdWords Editor and doing the tagging yourself.
