Using ? to differentiate my adwords clicks
Now that I am Top 5 for a lot of my terms, I am having more trouble telling which clicks are organic from Google and which are from Adwords. Is there any problem with adding ?Adwords or something like that to the end of the url the Ad is pointing to?
Example: www.bluewidgets.com/faq.htm?adwords Would Google frown on that within the context of Adwords for any reason? Cheers P.S. Im not looking to change my tracking methods as I am happy with the current one I am using. |

No reason I can think of for it to be a problem. A lot of affiliate programs use something like that to track which affiliate sent the referral, so of course you can do it on your own. Tracking your conversions is a very good idea, after all.

I use that to track hits from my network toolbar. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with adwords as well.

I find this method as the best way to track adwords.
You can even push it one step further to find out exactly what keywords are bringing hits. Simply use this method: www.domain.com/faq.html?adwords=keyword This way not only will you know it came from adwords, but which exact keyword was clicked. This is also a great way to check stats against the provided google adword reports. I use this format for Overture and other pay per click networks too. There is even a tracking service that will push this type of tracking to the next level. Check it out at conversionruler.com . I don't use it currently but am familiar with it and it works on this same method of using additional url values. If you need any info on tracking and different solutions be sure to ask. I have used and tested TONS of them. Thanks KG |

If it did will it work with a URL like this: www.domain.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=&rnd=4723241&rrc=N&affl=&cip=&act=&aff=&pg=cat&ref=fullskirt i.e. www.domain.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=&rnd=4723241&rrc=N&affl=&cip=&act=&aff=&pg=cat&ref=fullskirt?adwords=keyword or would I need to change something? |

I built separate landing pages for my most important keywords (not all of them because I have too many)... Based upon a few experiments I have found that keeping the terms the same as the search typed in has increased my conversion rates nicely. These pages were done specifically for ppc and will not be linked for SE indexing.
I might try writing a script to generate these pages on the fly and count the stats - then I can have custom landings for ALL of my keywords.

Talk about a blast from the past..I thought someone had written the same exact question as me then I realized it WAS me a month ago.
Anyway, Definitely post your results if you can EGOL. I have been doing some experimentation with "Adwords Optimization" and have been putting it together into what will eventually be my 1000th post. Of course that will be some time so hopefully my thunder isn't lost but the gist will be about how much of a difference time spent optimizing Adwords can make and the fact that people think nothing of spending all day every day getting links, but spend 10 minutes on their Adword or Overture campaign. I am researching how much more profit can be had by spending one of those "days" a week optimizing Adwords and tracking ROI, profits vs tiem spent etc. Cheers and I look forward to hearing more about your optimization Egol. |
