Starting a PPC campaign in google:

The company that I work for is planning to run a PPC campaign in google. My boss like an extern marketing company to run it for us. I mean that we should run it our self so we safe some money and keep the marketing inside the company.
I have never run a PPC before but for me it is all about getting more potential customers to visit our homepage – because you can’t know what kind of keyword your customers “prefers” – so I can not see the argument that an extern company’s could have the right experience!?
For me it seems pretty easy when you know the keywords for the campaign. So am I right when I say that it is wastes of money to get an extern company too run the campaign for us?

What do you say?
Thanks for the help!

The concept seems easy, and many people believe they can do pay-per-click. This is deceiving. There is actually a huge learning curve, and many common errors people make early on.

I have seen it over and over again with many companies and individuals. For the large companies, it is not as big a deal, since they may be used to throwing more and more money at a problem or a solution(however you look at it) until success is achieved. Smaller marketing budgets don't have this luxury. They start using AdWords by using what seems to feel like an intuitive approach, and find out that is actually the opposite of what works and how to make money.

I promise you, jump head first into AdWords without either doing an extended amount of research ( I am talking about reading at least 2 or 3 books, and reading forums for at least a couple months. Find the SEO Chat user called GaryTheScubaGuy and read every AdWords-related post he has made by choosing "see all posts" and "see all threads" in his profile), or you will lose, or be ineffective, at AdWords. The reason why there are firms and professionals is because it is not as easy as it sounds or looks.

Actually, here is a good place to start:
