They are really the same thing.
Like someone saying "let's go to the show". "Na... I'm going to see a movie".

Actually if you want to nitpick
PPC = pay per click CPC = cost per click PPC generally refers to the overall industry of paying for traffic. CPC I refer to as a measurement of how much a click costs. So different IMO. PPC is going to the theater. CPC is finding out that each picture costs a different amount and you need to pick the one that gives you the bets value for your money.

If Pay Per Click costs you $0.50 each time... is the Cost Per Click different? You would think that someone entrenched in the PPC industry and selling to customers would explain this better since their targeted customer they advertise to is a newbie... not someone entralled in PPC because CPC is a totally different ball of wax and really different. hmmm... people pay for SEO to build traffic so that must be PPC! |

My interpretation is slightly different.
IMO; PPC is where you set an explicit value for each click like how Overture used to work before it became Yahoo Search Marketing and like many other smaller PPC providers do. CPC is an average value of the cost per click as in Google AdWords method the value of Maximum CPC is set but not always achieved. I preffered the older PPC model as it was easier to calculate values but I presume the newer CPC model looks better because it appears as if you are getting some sort of discount for your adds being good (this probably keeps a lot of newbies and ammatures interested). Therefor I think CPC is a more commercial marketable method. Also, I notice that it always seems to cost more on a CPC model than it did with a PPC model, coincidence Im sure, not that Im getting sinical the older I am or anything like that you understand.

way to complicate things.
fathom i see what you're saying, I knew what you were saying i should say. we're arguing about semantics that clearly ahve more than one interpretation. but hey, let's just nit pick away.... and SEO does include PPC |

I want to nit-pick too... PPC is part of SEM not SEO; as SEO is arguably part of SEM also.

Hi johnsonnthomas,
Pay Per Click (PPC) is a term used to describe a particular advertising model. Cost Per Click (CPC) is simply a metric that is used to measure the what clicks cost within the PPC advertising model.
I can't resist the temptation to use the movie analogy: If you are going to see a movie at a Drive-in theatre you might ask if it's pay-per-car or pay-per-person. If it's pay-per-person, then you might ask what is the cost-per-person. PPC is the equivilent of describing the payment method and CPC is the equivilent of describing the cost within that payment method. Just replace the word "person" with "click" in the above analogy. |
