Overture and Adwords are both very effective if used right. There are other pay per click services that target fairly wide audiences that you can bid on higher competitive words for alot cheaper, spread the budget around =)

Welcome asiammyself!
One thing I have learned over and over again is that its not about one being better, its about utilizing all that is available by balancing your efforts by some percentage that works. It takes time to perfect and every industry is different. For example, one company might find it best to put 30% of their online advertising budget into Overture, 20% Google AdWords and 25% into Organic SEO work. The remainder might go to other online campaigns and keyword and brand development. Finding the right mix and balance takes time and trial and error. It can happen sooner if you speak with experts here and if you have the right tools to measure your online advertising efforts. Keep at it!

Didjital, I could not disagree more. It has been my experience (I have spent over $500,000 in 2003 on PPC) that the only decent trafic (read converting) comes from Adwords, Looksmart, and Overture. There are so many clickbots running on all of the other PPC's 'parter' sites, that you will find you are spending less per click, but getting nothing in return. I guess other market segments might be different, but in mine (very competative), all of the others add up to a bunch of nothing. I have shown several of the sales and technical people at ah-ha, findwhat, mamma, etc. logs showing that many of their so called 'visitors' to my site spent less than 1 second on the site, or only requested the page but no images, only went one level deep when the home page has no products, etc. that it was not truly meaningful traffic. All they ever did was to apologize and offer me a little bit of 'free' traffic to try them out some more. I am sure that there are those who will rush to defend these other PPC venues, but to me they are not worth the minimum initial investment. Sorry about the soapbox, I just hate to see so many people get ripped off by these scam artists. The traffic on Google and Overture may cost more, but there is a good reason why - it works. Looksmart has a different model of course, but at .15 per click, I have found it converts very well. Not as good in terms of sheer volume as Google and Overture, but for me it has shown the best ROI. |

Adwords all the way
Adwords is way better than Overture for several reasons:
1) more traffic 2) position is based on relevancy (click through rate) as much as dollars. This means that your bid could be significantly less expensive with Adwords if your ad is better written, more relevant, etc. 3) broad matching and phrase matching in Adwords isn't done by many people, so I can get much lower bid prices than with Overture on some keywords. 4) way better interface, and I find Overture's speed to really suck lately. 5) Overture takes some time to approve keywords, and then rejects some and doesn't tell you why, or even which keywords! I also use looksmart, because for the $0.15 directory hits, it's worth it to me. |

Don't be sorry about saying that. I have seen my click bill from some of these minor engines show a lot more clicks than are counted in my website log. I don't use them anymore either. They must think that I am freekin stupid. |
