Can anyone tell me what are meta search engines? If there are search engines like google, yahoo, bing and others then what is the need of meta search engines?

Meta search engines combine the results of more than one 'regular' search engine. Surely you can see the benefit of that from a web searcher's point of view....?

Meta-search engines do not crawl the Web or maintain a database of web pages. Instead, they act as a middle agent, passing on the query to the major engines and then returning the results.

Well Meta search engine is a serach tool that sends user requests to several other search engines. Metasearch engines enable users to enter search criteria once and access several search engines simultaneously. Metasearch engines operate on the premise that the Web is too large for any one search engine to index it all and that more comprehensive search results can be obtained by combining the results from several search engines. This also may save the user from having to use multiple search engines separately.
