Hmm, quality one time fee directories. Does someone have a list of such directories that are quality? This would be a useful list.
I know one: www.knowledge-finder.com has a directory. It's a new directory so it hasn't been fully indexed yet. But I can promiss you this is a directory that tries to deliver the best service to both visitors and webmasters. (How do I know this?..... Together with a friend I own and run this website,.. )

Look at strongestlinks.com (choose "directories" in the left hand menu). Lots of info on topics, PR, fees etc. for many directories. Applied to a lot of those, even got into some for free within two days. Wow was good for me.

Strongestlinks is a great resource. I applied to many of those and got in surprisingly quick as well.

>Wow was good for me.
I'm a big fan of wowdirectory.com. They also have a nice $20 annual sponsored submission.

Bluefind.com is a good value. $50 for a strong link. The creator, John Scott, is starting up a new directory, sevenseek.com, that I think is worth keeping an eye on. Once Google updates PR, it should be at least a seven.

here's a few I've used:
http://www.skaffe.com/ free 4 hours a day
http://www.mavicanet.com/ free
http://www.illumirate.com/ free
http://www.spheri.com/ free
http://www.web-beacon.com/DIR/ free
http://dir.jayde.com/ free [lots of anchor text and direct links on your profile page]
http://www.theknowledgenetwork.org/ free with recip.
http://www.sightquest.com free with recip.
http://www.joeant.com

here's a few I'm considering:
http://www.thisisouryear.com/ $8 - per URL; free with recip
http://www.1st-spot.net/ $10 - per URL
http://www.linkopedia.com/ $9.95 - per URL
http://www.informationoutpost.com/ $5 per category
http://www.searchturtle.com/ $5 per URL
http://www.arielis.com/dir/ $25 - per URL

www.linkmarket.net is pretty good as well if you´re searching for reciprocal links. If you like you can even buy high PR links. A site like www.textlinkbrokers.com sells them. You can even sell links to them.

But I still believe that the best way is to have a great website with lots of great content. That gets you links for free from all over the world.

Most small directories give links that don't pass Pagerank. Illumirate is a great example of this. I dont even bother with this stuff. They don't even give 1 visitor every 2 months.

I am actually thinking of the microsoft small buisness directory

What seems good about this one is you are allowed to list multiple services which you provide. So you can receive backlinks to a few of your targeted pages. At $49 a year seems reasonable as well.

I just launched a link exchange directory similar to linkmarket.net except that it's much more automated.

Do you think it could be useful?

Thanks

I think Yahoo is good for some sites, and some smaller directories are good for link building strategy if they are free or they don't ask too much.

So if Y doesn't pass PR then why does StrongestLinks say that they do. Has this list not just been updated or do they know something we don't?

One problem with Microsoft's small business directory is the links are listed in the order they are received, so usually you find yourself on the 10th page of results which is of little value.
