Wikipedia 'listing'

Does anybody know, how are the external links to Wikipedia article selected ?
For some of my regional sites it could make sense to have an external link there both for Wikipedia and me.

Err, you just add them yourself and hope nobody else deletes them.

Thanks ambergambler, I will write one or two and get some "authority" link for low effort.
Is Wikipedia a "authority" website ?

Tried a wiki thing just now. There was room for my link (hehe) because someone else already added theirs. But I took the time to change the actual text as well, take out a couple of typos, add a bit of clarification. You give some, you take some I guess. Now let's see when my link gets kicked off...

I suppose wikipedia is an authority site in its own right, but that doesn't mean that authority is conferred to you. Wiki definitions often come up tops in Vivisimo/Clusty (not that anyone uses them ;)), and people might look that one up and link to you from there. I got quite a few PR3 links out of wiki (the results will also find their way into wiki clones eventually - similar to dmoz clones). I don't think Google is too impressed (then again, who knows with google these days, I still reckon google's broken), but have a sneaky suspicion that msn likes them. And why not - wiki is a democratic system, where people can delete your link if they reckon it's not up to scratch. You may want to consider adding links from competitor sites as well, esp. if those competitors link to you. Less chance of someone deleting your link
Anyway, as they say, "every little helps"!

Hehe - if I weren't into self-promotion right now (I don't know why - no real need), I'd have taken out the other "blatant" link. I guess ethics are graded "on a curve" as well. Long live wiki's though...

----------
changed the picture on the english version (and rightly so - I might add). Of course I didn't hesitate to put a link on the pic's details page. Heh: I even got traffic from that (not that it does me any good...)
But... wiki rules.
