why directories won't be considered as link farm
I see more and more people are creaing directories now, since some directories require you pay money go get in and they contain all kinds of outbound link, isn't this the same as link farm? why not this be penalized?

A directory is not a link farm. I've copied some quotes here of some ways to tell what a link farm is.
The website adds your URL to a long list of URLs and requires that you place that "cookie-cutter" page on your website. In essence, you end up using exactly the same links page as thousands of other sites. A link farm is when group of website owners get together to link to each other. One main links page is created with links to all the participant's websites and each participant places that links page on her website. Voila! Instant links to your website.
