that really depends on the nature of your website, there are dedicated directories depending upon what kind of website you have

Check out the «SEO friendly list» http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock=seo-friendly.php These directories do accept submissions and they're SEO friendly - no cloacked links, etc... And best of all - they're free |

From SEOMoz
Here's a good list ranked by PR from randfish's SEOMoz:
http://www.socengine.com/seo/guide/seo-list-of-directories.php That's also a great site with quite a bit of other useful information - it's worth looking around. |

If there is an award for "most asked SEO forums question" I think the question shiner25 just asked would rank very high. How about you just go to Google search and type something like "web directories list" or just go to some SEO forums and search directories section, you will find plenty threads that answer your question.

There are some threads on this in the directories section...
I haven't submitted sites to directories in quite some time though, so it really isn't as necessary anymore.

Cygnus - It's not neccessary, but it's a good way to get a small, early site set up for use 6-9 months down the road to dodge nasty sandboxing...
I also like the early link popularity if you're in a fairly non-competitive space and can get some visitors to your more unique content which may then get you some natural backlinks. You need to get seen to get linked to, and directories is a good way to get a few search visitors each day. |

I just feel that people got into the directory craze shortly after we all realized how important that DMOZ link was, for PR purposes...obviously, a lot has changed since then, putting less emphasis on the higher PR directory links, and potentially more emphasis on relevant links from "like" sites.
It isn't a knock on directories so much as an educational seguay into the other forms of links [the sandbox comments and link pop comments I agree with you on]. |

Directories do not hurt, in fact most of the time they help... So Cygnus I think your comments are not all the way accurate about the irrelevancy of directories.

directory submission makes a huge difference for a new site when most sites don't want to exchange links with you.

Submitting to directories never hurts. Not only you get a link but traffic as well. Maybe its just 1 click a day but when you have your link in 500-1000 directories it can bring some substantial traffic.

Yahoo! directory is a good one, however, quite expensive.
