What a waste of time
I think most of the free directories posted here are just a waste of time. I just wasted 15 minutes trying to submit to couple of them. They either error out or ask for reciprocal link. I would rather pay some little fee to paid directory then waste time like this. For me time is money and these "free" directories are costing me money.

I feel you happened to stumble across a couple of less-than-perfect ones
FYI there are people keeping a list of totally free dirs (including myself - heh), but especially this one here... http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock=seo-friendly.php ...is noteworthy P.S.: that is not mine but a fellow member's site.

Submitting right site to right directories in right category at right time. It can't go wrong if we get everything right. I routinely get PR2-PR4 permanent links from directory submissions.
The list wit posted is a very good one (about 70% of them are really good ones). I maintain a list of good directories myself.

It's quite alright.
I couldn't submit to all (16) free dirs though, because: - some dirs are kind of mirrors of the one that appears to have suspended free submissions - one required a recip link - not a big issue, but in my case a nono - one didn't have an appropriate category, and they didn't accept a listing in a higher cat. I suggested a new cat for the experiment's sake So all in all I got about 8 submissions in and - even though the guidelines forced me to edit now and again - it was a relief not having to type (or copy/paste) all that sh** over and over again. In short - a REAL timesaver. Would pay for more if I had a budget > $0,- |

If you've only wasted 15 minutes, you haven't dug very deep yet! I agree though that directories that encourage you to add sites "for free" and don't disclose a requirement for reciprocal links until after you submit are infuriating. May they all perish in directory h*ll. ![]()

I will not say that its waste of 15 minutes, rather its a learning. Usually I start with one site and submit to almost all self proclaimed free directories, once I start getting listed in those directories, I mark that in my excel sheet that I maintain, thereafter I go ahead and submit in all such directories that approved my initial listing.
So I would say, test the waters first and then spend your time on selected few sites. In fact even I have a directory alldotnet.com and it is free |

Stick to higher pr and more targeted directories. This way you'll feel like you did something worthwhile.
