http://www.websavvy.cc/ has re-opened and it looks to be a very nice, free directory.
The owner (Deb) is a moderator (Websavvy) at IHY forums and has made the directory very search engine friendly. You even get to recommend a description for the title attribute on your directory listing. As I understand it, Websavvy will be offering syndication of its database similar to the way DMOZ does. Deb has indicated that she already has several partners lined up, so listings will soon have added value (and direct traffic) beyond the original site. Websavvy is a human edited directory and currently has many editors who are also editors (and meta editors) for other major directories. They have several thousand URLs in the queue(s) already, so be patient...

Very nice looking directory. At this point, however, I am wary of adding my sites to directories anymore. With Google's new algo, the directory sites that list my sites, are now showing up in the top 10 and mine disappear. It is as though Google sees these large directories as being authority sites, so my little link shows the directory in the top 10, instead of my site. Am not happy about that.

Hi,
My name is Deb and I'm the owner/programmer/designer of WebSavvy Directory. Quote:
I think I can answer that one for you. The number of users online is done through server side scripting and is not allowed to be pulled from beyond my own domain, therefore when Google makes a cache of the domain index page it's stored on Google server and becomes "not local to my server" and will display the leaching message. This was setup to prevent bandwidth thieves because they link to images, scripts, etc. Thanks for the compliments about my directory. |

LOL!
Quote:
The little "things" in the logo are "nerd tapes" ... e.g. A thickly coated white adhesive tape commonly used within a surgical procedure to close a wound, however, quite useful to visually challenged eggheads to mend their broken spectacles. The words web savvy translated means, "web smarts" ... so therefore the e was purposefully made backwards, and the "nerd tapes" were put into the logo. I guess I'm the only one besides my business partner who caught the humor in it. I made the logo myself, and it was about the third or fourth example of sorts I'd made when coming up with ideas for the directory. When my partner saw that one he said "This is it!" |

well....thats funnie.
my second guess was 'little books'. like little directories. my third guess was little 'thumbs up'. [which may have been subconsciously inferred by bernards original post icon.] i like the logo...either way. [not that youre taking opinions about your logo design.] did you ever consider doing the two words in different colors. like 'web' in blue and 'savvy' in 'red'? [another unsolicited opinion.] |

LOL! I've heard other really funny guesses about the "things" in the logo too.
One of my friends who lives in France, thought that the little things in the logo were flies. He asked me, "Why did you add those disturbed looking flies to the logo?" Someone else thought they were "teeth." I've also heard "books" ... "moths" ... "dirty butterflies" ... and some other odd ones. Maybe I should put that Q in our FAQs? ;) As far as the logo colors, when I first made it I did it in red but it just didn't have that pop to it. Then I did it in blue, which happens to be my favorite color and my partners favorite color, it just seemed to look more balanced. I like the logo being all one color. I have other sites where I've made logo's in more than one color and it works for them, but the solid blue with the white nerd tapes ... the backwards "e" and the letters unaligned, just sets us apart from the herd. That was my original goal. |
