As a bit of an exercise, I tried hunting down all the top ranking directories (eg - edited by humans, sorted into categories) that offer free submission and sort them by Alexa rank. Eg - by how much traffic each directory gets (yes, I know what many skeptics think on the Alexa forum but it is useful for relative comparisons). For anyone interested, I posted the results at:
xxxhttp://www.tipsntutorials.com/Top-Directories/ I also included the Google PageRank of each directory - I figure the two things I'm most interested in when submitting a site to a directory is it's PageRank (in particular, the pagerank of the subcategory page that will feature your link) and how much traffic it gets. Predictably, the PageRank tends to fall as the Alexa rank falls. Strangely, some high Alexa ranking sites have a 0 PageRank - I don't know if they've been blacklisted by Google or what that's about. Anyway, the point of this post - first, I thought others might be interested in the list and perhaps have some insights or comments on the list. Secondly, if anyone can think of any directories I don't have listed, they are more than welcome to submit the URL (there's a URL field on the page for adding URLs). Thanks! One piece of very important data in ranking a directory is how many pages it has indexed in Google. It’s a good indication as to whether the site is going to give you a link. Some of the high volume sites only have a fraction of their topics indexed; some as few as 5,000 and showing no page rank on most internal pages. It might be a helpful bit of data to add.

webmaster directories
No probs, most 'directories of directories' just list them willy nilly which I find fairly impractical so I thought it about time we had a page with all the important SEO information in one place. I just have to add stoner's advice of number of pages indexed by Google which is indeed a valuable piece of info.
Since then I've started submitting my site to webmaster directories so I've began a new page of 'directories of webmaster resources' - not as large as my general directories list but still useful: xxxhttp://www.tipsntutorials.com/Webmaster-Directories Last edited by EGOL : July 27th, 2004 at 09:14 PM. You list the Yahoo directory as not having clean links in your Top-Directories list. My Yahoo directory listing is showing as a backlink in a link: search on Google.
Buzzle does not offer a free directory listing. Those have a one time fee. The free submissions are for the search index. I didn't have time to check your whole list.

Yahoo clean links
Re Yahoo links, I wouldn't call a link like "http://rds.yahoo.com/S=396540
As for Buzzle, they DO offer free directory submission but only for "Non-Profit, Government, or Educational sites". But thanx for the clarification, I need to update my database to include that info. To Gabs, thanx for the craft directory submission. At this stage, I'm only displaying general directories in my 'Top Directories' list but I am gradually building a list of niche directories as well (I already have other craft directories as one of my clients sells embroidery machine) so I'm definitely keeping your URL in my database and will maybe look to add the niche directories later on. |

Yes, the Yahoo Directory listing still shows as a backlink in Google (on page 9 for interplansystems.com as of this minute).
Buzzle's strict definition of (registered) non-profits, government and (accredited/school) education sites will exclude 99.9% of sites from consideration. Non-profits are not accepted with 3rd party advertising (AdSense, banners, etc.) on them either. Last edited by Bernard : June 7th, 2004 at 06:33 PM. |

Re Buzzle, well, it's still there as an option and my list is there just to present the facts. In my database, I have info on paid options but I didn't want to overload the list with too much info. Maybe later on I'll post a comprehensive list including a description of each directory, paid info, number of pages indexed by Google, etc.

jfocook, what does the "indexable" column represent in your list of top directories?
I do not believe that Jayde directory listings are indexed by search engines. They point to "site information pages" which contain clean links, but these info pages are all PR0 and appear to be mod-rewrite pages. If they are using a CGI engine, they are blocked from search engines by the Jayde robots.txt |
