General questions: What good is it to do a recip with a directory that has a lower pr than your site if the directory does not have relevance to your site theme? Doesn't G frown upon that? I would think if the above is true, you should not do a reciprocal. Doesn't the leakage in the final analysis have more a negative than a positive effect?

PageRank is intangible e.g. If say, the site in question is a PR3 and you a PR5, and 2 months later they are PR7 and you are still PR5... then what? Quote:
Seed the web with linkage... DMOZ has 4+ million outbound -- in the final analysis they are Titanic -- right? Forget PageRank as a stand-alone variable -- it's not, and it's not the end goal either, thus if you only link to save PageRank (or for PageRank, and/or PageRank of TODAY) you are totally missing the reason why it exists. |

Actually I did miss one part of your question.
On theme links do have the benefit of weight and relevancy (besides PageRank) being passed. Less targeted topics have less weight and relevancy being passed but receive the same PageRank nonetheless... Specifically Google doesn't frown "on any link" - the "link pattern" however, is the problem -- e.g. link farm ...but: almost nothing a competitor can do can harm you (which is the inbound link persay) thus if the site has something "tangible" in all likelihood your outgoing link will not get you in any problems. |

Not really but try my sig and be sure to look around - while some directories are topic specific - their is cats a level down that may be a good fit.

Fathom; I posted in one but not the other because of the link back requirement. Got to think about that.
Comments/questions One year ago I started posting in any directory, and submitting to any search engine I could find. We are a hands on training school, and completely non tech. Our site has risen dramatically in SERPs in the last year. Two topical directories(really marketing businesses) have really paid off in terms of traffic and BL's, RWM, and to a lesser degree, GoTrain. We paid to get into them. Their BL are relatively high and helped boost our PR. Both deliver traffic that has turned into sales. It appears they have worked very hard to be reached by their target audiences; (I think they have advertised to high schools/and they certainly have optimized on certain terms. (people searching for trade school training). We receive more traffic from them than all the directories to which we submitted in aggregate. Could you comment upon them and the differences with your directories. Dave www.bartending-school.com |

Ultimately I believe in "seeding the web with linkage".
I don't simply chase PageRank as for one - in itself it is really worth only ego tripping. Secondly (and using an example) a client paid for 2 PR7 and one PR8 links (site-wide) costing $800/month- after this last update they are now PR6 and PR7 - while some might say "ain't worth it now" - well he's stuck paying for a year. PageRank is a relative thing so you really can't use it as an absolute gauge. Also the underlying principle is "voting" and it simply isn't only reflectant in the votes cast to you but also in the votes you cast yourself. Notwithstanding if you don't wish to link back that's fine there are many places that don't require it. |

Fathom, thanks for your response. I've learned a lot reading through your posts. We are relooking at our site to see if and how and where we may link back to your directory and others that are somewhat off our theme.
I'm fascinated by the two directories I mentioned before. They are businesses off the web that seem to be working. My guess is they advertised into their viewership markets, (students) and gain a lot of traffic. They also have managed to get reasonable PR and do well in a couple of different keywords. Clearly they deliver traffic (at least to us). Its of more volume than virtually all the directories (in aggregate) we submitted to over the last year. I simply think they work. Certainly, in our case. |
