Welcome to the forum.
Everyone wants to get their site to the top of Google, so you are certainly not alone. How you go about that will make the difference between whether you succeed or fail. There is no magic solution or software which will do this for you, and there is no substitute for hard work, so be prepared for that... or pay a pro to do it for you.
The first tip I can give you is that multiple directory submissions will not help your campaign. The time spent searching for directories to submit your site to, would be better spent reading the stickies on this forum and learning about what is and isn't effective SEO.
As far as tips for your site goes, that's an impossible question I suppose without actually seeing your site, as no one knows what you've done already. But for that, you should have 30 posts under your belt and there is a separate forum specifically for that purpose.

A good tool to use is Google Webmaster tools - it will show you all of your page errors such as 404's and crawl errors.

Directory links alone cannot give you guarantee that your site will be visible on top of SERPs. You have to explore other ways to market your site and try other link building avenues like social bookmarking, article marketing, etc. And bear in mind that link building should go hand-in-hand with proper on-page optimization. Make sure to provide quality posts in your website too. ;)
