"Quality" and "directories" is somewhat of a oxymoron (look it up). Once you get beyond Yahoo and DMOZ it goes rapidly down hill. Today, about the only quality directories to look for backlinks from are human edited (paid or free) specialty directories or those dedicated to confined geographic area.

I'm developing a website dedicated to this topic web-directories.com . At this point it is in the first development phase, but it can give you some general idea.

If you have a suggestion please submit it on the website.

    Thanks.

Thanks for this - looks like a decent list of good PR sites. We'll try them and let you know how it goes!

The list is not based on PR only. PR is just one of the factors. The idea is to create a set of quality factors and have a list of directories that would meet all quality factors.
This way only high quality directories would be included in the list, and the list would not grow to monstrous size like many other lists around.

Thanks for this - you're right, PR is not the be all and end all these days. Too many firms I know slavishly go after the higher PR sites but we're using it as just a simple signal. The one's we like are relevant to the sector or industry our client is in, and contextual wherever possible. Seems like your list is exactly what is needed - keep the quality and weed out the worthless.

Just yesterday there was a story doing the rounds of Google now starting to de index free directory sites. If this is true then it could herald the demise of the rubbish directories and remove yet another short cut that SEO firms have been trying to use.

Keep the list up! We like it and it could well be the future!

    I disagree...
    digg isn't a directory it's a social news website.

    OK, define "quality"
or at least your understanding of what that means.

To answer your question I'll quote great Robert M. Pirsig

"Now, to take that which has caused us to create the world, and include it within the world we have created, is clearly impossible. That is why Quality cannot be defined. If we do define it we are defining something less than Quality itself."

So you don’t know and because it’s so, how are you going to
determine which directory is a Quality one and which isn’t?
