Dont submit your site to free directories. Just get one link from yahoo directory and that is enough to have good traffic, good ranking and pr of 4 or 5 .

What do you need 50,000 for? You setting up a world record or something?

There is a bunch of lists out there - only problem most of them are outdated as nobody maintains them once they have been compiled so a lot of directories in those lists will be long dead.

Here is a good place for you to start, at least this is SUPPOSED to be maintained by the editors: http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=directories&all=yes

Also check my sig for something you may find handy.

So is there a right way that you can submit to directories that changes them from being worthless to something of value??

Of course there is, as is with every other kind of link building :-) Not only do you have to choose the right directories to submit to, but also follow a few other rules, as in: choose the right categories, use the right keywords in your anchor texts etc.

If you don't mind, can you tell us how do you choose the right directories?

Help you a lot, how?

As far as G. concerned, Yahoo and DMOZ give you 1 link each and because in G. eye link from Yahoo and link from some Garbage Disposal site is equal then how 2 links will help you a lot?

I know there are a lot of people in the SEO world that frown upon directory submissions, especially the free directory submission strategy.

As with most things in SEO, there is no one solution that will help you find success. It is a combination of many different aspects and directory submissions can be one of them. It definitely will not perform as well as link bait, paid links and many other techniques but it can provide some value, especially in getting you that slight boost you need to overtake a competitor who is outranking you!

To answer the OP... use http://www.directorycritic.com/ as it is the most well maintained list that I have come across.

You are right about that.
Lets face it, in the beginning new site owner has only one friend on Internet who will give him backlink for free and that friend is Directory

As to directorycritic, I must say that this is cesspool of spam infested list worst of the kind you can find online used by morons, suckers and born yesterday SEOs. If you really want to have list of hand picked directories to submit to, then use http://info.vilesilencer.com
