Does anyone here actually get click throughs from directories? Build link strategy on traffic and PR follows surely. Or should I exercise my "cynical" muscles?
Good links to sites that bring traffic usually generates income and PR. Targetting related sites within your sector is harder work, but the gains are worth it. and yes I have used directories and DMOZ is important but only as part of an overall strategy. ___________________________________ Website works Last edited by mountainmad : May 20th, 2004 at 04:47 AM. |

Splendes, your How to add url? is broken. Get a cannot find server. Also, you posted to a very old thread.
Once you are ready for prime time, why don't you come back and start a new thread and introduce your directory to us properly. You will probably get more support that way. Last edited by SEO_AM : June 6th, 2004 at 09:54 AM. |

I've also found this list very useful but haven't saved it. The thread (or just the list?) seems to have disappeared. A couple of days ago it was still around - or is it in another category? Could the person re-publish it, please? Thanks, |

Directories are a thing of the past, really?
Quote:
Hi, Just stumbled across this post. Wondering if you've revised your opinion since you posted... Just to set the record straight... DMOZ is one of the most powerful sites online since many of the search engines pick up results from their listings. True, they are staffed by volunteers and the amount of work that it takes to keep a good directory updated is inhuman so many of the links are stale. A few of the volunteers snuck through the screening and got to be editors of a category only to promote their own site...but those faux editors are long gone. IF you can get a DMOZ listing, it will be very beneficial to your site. Yahoo has made a major turn around since you wrote and is once again a major player in both search and their directory. Is it worth the high fee to pay for a listing of one page of your site in their directory? I don't think so, not now, but that may change as the Web turns... Should you pay for a listing in any directory? I'd say that's totally up to you. If you put in half as much time on your site as we do on ours...and work like a demon to make it a terrific resource, you probably won't have to. But if you don't want to put in the time and forget about having a life...or if you don't have the expertise to turn out a top notch site - there's a lot of competition online and a listing in a GOOD directory may just be worth the investment. Before you invest, check the directory you are considering, see what kinds of sites you'll be hanging with. A directory that links to a lot of good sites on any topic will gather a good following. If you have a related product - it will probably bring you good convertable traffic. Visitors who will buy your product or click on your ads. A directory that lists crap will not get a lot of business. Do your research. You can even ask the webmaster what the stats are like. Google the keywords - does the directory come up high in the SERPs - the Search Engine Results Pages? What's the Google page rank. That's not a definite way to judge a site, but a good page rank probably means that the directory has a lot of links feeding traffic to it. How many listings are there in your category? Too many means you won't get found on a very long list of probably not all high quality sites - too few means the directory page with your listing on it probably won't get found. Is the directory searchable? Web users are notorious for their lack of patience and a search box makes finding things easier... Figure out how many sales or ad clicks it will take you to get back your investment and decide if there is a reasonable chance that you would earn more than you paid for the listing. You know - ROI - return on investment? If you are pretty sure you'll come out ahead, then it makes sense to invest. If there isn't a chance you'll make your money back -- don't throw away your hard earned money to pay for a link that won't bring you decent traffic... You judge all of the directories online by the hyped or scammy ones. Sure there are plenty of directories where you go to a page to find...nothing. There are plenty of others who import the DMOZ results to have something to hang ads on. But there are so many directories with people who work like maniacs to keep the information up to date and clean out bad links, dead or taken over domains and sites that are still up, but haven't been updated in years. Do you run a site with a decent Google PR? How many link exchange requests do you get every day. Multiply that by at least 10 and you'll have an idea of the number of 'requests to be added' a directory webmaster gets. Every directory that accepts free submissions and does any screening devotes many hours every day to adding links that have been suggested. Most don't mind because their object is to build a large and clean set of links to sites, but if a webmaster decides to charge a fee for the service...it may not be because they don't get traffic or because their ads don't get clicked. I'm with the Chiff.com directory. We just stopped accepting submissions from webmasters and people associated with the sites they were recommending because we would have had to take on more just staff to keep reviewing suggestions that should not have been submitted to an information and resources directory. We have a paid section of the directory for businesses. We didn't put up the free section of the directory to spam sites into the paid section. We added the paid section for sites wanting to get into our directory that don't have the information and resources that we look for in sites we add to the free section. We now tell webmasters, search engine optimizers and link builders to just skip right over to the e-Biz section and add a listing... That way we can keep looking for sites that focus on providing lots of relevant quality resources about their topics. As far as directories getting no traffic, we may not be the busiest site online, but we're averaging almost 750,000 visitors a month and that figure keeps growing...and there are plenty of other excellent niche directories around that get lots of traffic because... they are good. As long as search results bring up tons of what you aren't looking for, targeted directories will be a useful alternative... Sorry about the length of this. Good luck with all of your sites, Margaret Chiffriller PS. The hyperlinks to sponsored ads in this posting when you access it from outside the forum are not from me... is this standard at this forum?
