Directory Submissions matter anymore?

I have been closely following one of my competitors (who ranks high in every search) who uses paid directory submissions. We are both listed in the Yahoo directory (neither in the DMOZ), however I have not done any submissions outside of that. My question is: Is it possible he ranks higher than me with the help of directory submissions? Or are they just a waste of time and money at this point? With directory submission you can choose the exact anchor text, which would be nice for improving SERP's. Should I drop $100 (roughly what he has invested) or so into them?

Some directories matter such as
Yahoo Directory, Joeant, Businesss.com, Goguides.com, Websitedirectory21.com, thisisouryear.com and many more

The thing is try to get listed under your own categories then you will get LJ a bit out of it.

Automated submissions will hurt your SERPs.
Try to get free one way links(manually) to your site. Submite your site in various directories for improving your page value. But your submitted categories should be more relevant for your page.Try to submite in DMOZ also.

Yeah and try the sites offering free listing but of good quality and relevance. Try directorycritic.com

Google is down on directories that have some of the following characteristics

Too many listings/links per page
Listings are in alphabetical order
Reciprocal and paid for rank directories

Google doesn't care about automated submissions, but you should. Google cares that the directory has a decent process of looking over the site and it's theme. The reason you should care about automated submissions is that the generic data you enter to do these is generally going to get declined by any good directory as it will not meet the guidelines for things like, length, structure, and category selection. If you want the best performance do manual submissions and read the instructions well. In my directory the simplest instruction: description 190-210characters, and I give them a counter gets over 75% of the submissions declined.

Some are worth it IMO such as Yahoo, good human reviewed directories are still valuable in that you can use them to improve your link profile ie: you get a link to a site about cars on a page with lots of other sites about cars. It helps SE's determine the validity of your site for the keywords you are targetting.

JagNet agrees: I use directories for co-citation purposes as much as for any link value
