Comprehensive list of free, spiderable directories
I will try to keep this up to date with any suggestions for additions anyone has. I'll post this on multiple forums to get input and additional directory suggestions.
the only requirements are: 1) a decent PR, so the pages with the listings are at least spidered and cached by google 2) can't have any sort of "work arounds" for not counting as a "real" link (ie js redirects) 3) urls for the categories must be SE friendly 4) must have a free (not paid) submission option 5) can't require a recip link 6) it can't be free only for editors general/all-purpose directories: http://www.dmoz.org/ (base page PR9) http://dir.yahoo.com/ (base page PR9) http://www.earthstation9.com (base page PR6, it uses frames, but it is SE friendly) http://www.geniusfind.com/ (base page PR6) http://www.re-quest.net/ (base PR6) http://www.qango.com/ (base page PR6) http://www.wowdirectory.com/ (base page PR6) http://www.directoryarchives.com/ (base page PR6) http://www.gimpsy.com/ (base page PR6) http://www.smartlinks.org (base PR5) http://www.josh.nu/ (base PR5) http://www.blakkat.com/ (base PR5) http://www.webworldindex.com/ (base page PR5) http://www.yeandi.com/ (base page PR5) http://www.turnpike.net/directory.phtml (base page PR5) http://www.websavvy.cc/ (base page PR5) http://www.webworldindex.com/ (base page PR5) http://www.worldwidewub.org/ (base page PR4) http://www.sezza.com (base PR4) http://www.thedirectorysite.com/ (base page PR4) http://www.seekon.com/ (base page PR3) directories with special circumstances: http://www.webmasterschannel.com/ (base PR7, only web/computer related sites) http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/directory.shtml (mostly web/computer related, preference in order given to recip urls, base PR6) http://www.buzzle.com/ (free only for non-profits, schools, and government sites, base page PR6) other resources to check out: http://dmoz.org/Reference/Directories/ (great list of specialized topic-specific directories) so, if you want, start submitting to those directories. also, if you can spare a link from any of your sites- LINK TO THESE DIRECTORIES. show directories that we appreciate spiderable, free directories. it could motivate others to move in the same direction, and it'd also increase the overall PR of each directory and help us all in the long term. if you have any I haven't included, feel free to post them here. if you have problems submitting to one of these directories (perhaps because they change their submission policies), let me know please.

Buzzle only offers free submissions to the directory for registered non-profits that do not carry 3rd party advertising, government sites and accredited schools. All other sites must pay a one time fee for the directory. Free submission for commercial sites is for the search engine index only.
I'm compiling a list of directories with comments regarding their value to SEO which I hope to post on SEO Help sometime in the next few weeks. There are a few directories on your list which I have not processed yet.

Thanks: When we first started trying to climb the SERPs, and not knowing anything about this, we submitted to directories galore. Initially it helped moving us from around 46 for our main keyword phrase into the 20's. Then we started learning more and used more of the techniques described here.
I will say this, after entering lots of directories our SPAM went through the roof! I'll still submit. One thing is while direct hits to our site, google, and yahoo dominate, we get visits from over 100 sources. It does add up. Dave |

this is a great list, had a few I didn't know about. Question though - you say they need spiderable urls - I take it you aren't commenting on how they link to people, right? A handfull use javascript to link out.
edit: I think that webmasterchannel is going to get hit soon - they have a crazy little network going. -Greg

what do you mean by "hit"?
by spiderable I mean two things... the url needs to be search engine friendly, and the links need to be something that will actually count (not cloaked, using js, using an exitcounter, etc) |

How do you do the free submit to Yahoo these days? - I remember the option existing for non-commercial sites but can't find it any more.
Keep an eye on www.sezza.com - they are working hard on that directory, but it's new so still PR0. |

Ooch, Google seems to be getting pretty serious with their linking 'filters'. I suppose if a big part of their ranking algo is based on links then they'd want to keep it clean.
We've had a lot of that in the last few months with links.htm, then this sandbox thing. I suspect there will be more to come. Thanks disgust. Don't know why I wasn't finding the free submit, but it is very much still there. ![]() |

Hi,
Good list! Another comprehensive list can be found at the Strongest Links (click here), which includes many measurements updated monthly. Cheers MC Last edited by MC : June 11th, 2004 at 08:36 PM. Reason: typo |

I noticed that some of your information there wasn't accurate- ie, Yahoo IS free, but there's a paid option.
an interesting list though. I'll check it out in more detail in a bit and add the ones that fit the requirements here. |

Is it possible to have a spiderable link that also tracks clickthroughs? What about a plain text link with an onclick event which launches an intermediate page to record the click, then redirects on to the actual site? eg:
<a href="http://www.example.com" onclick="recordClick()"> That way, SE's and other non-JS agents just go through to the links, and JS-enabled agents record the click? Or am I totally off base? |
