1997 Website but small links

I have been put in charge of a website that was first listed in 1997 but it has a very small amount of links.

My question is is it worth submiting to directories??? If so how many should i submit to??

I am not prepared to pay for directory submiting so it will all be done myself so I want them to be useful directories that should give me some benefit.

How do other people use directories and what benfits ave they seen??

Cheers

Submitting to directories can help build backlinks, although the free ones may take up to several months. Check out directory critic.com, it has a lot of free directories. Remember to submit to the most relevant directories and categories for your site.

As much as you can.
But be careful about the section,it must be related to your theme.
I would suggest to go for non-reciprocal directories.

As far as directories go they are okay, submit to them if you have time but don't reciprocate with any. Spend the bulk of your time building up content and creating linkbait. Also requesting links does work, the ratio of requests to links is high but it still does work and is worth it. You could also pay somebody to build quality links for you.

BTW what industry is this site in? I also own a site from that era and they are gold mines of age factor
