The Open Directory search is currently under a heavy load...

...Please try back later.

This line seems to come more often.

Are they short of servers, running out of money? etc...?

thanks
viggen

Hmm, I seem to live near this place. It looks very much like the nearby NC and VA suburban communities...

...maybe I could start a "hand delievered submission service?"

or if it's not to far: 2 soup cans and a string?

LOL! This is great. As another user stated this explains it all.

Cris, you could also try some smoke signals. They might be able to see them through the high tech ventilation holes in the machine room.

The odp has become VERY slow.

At times I am lucky enough to have a dedicated T1 line and it takes me about 15 seconds to load the www.dmoz.org homepage, which is such a prro response time.

I think they got sick of paying for bandwidth and started hosting the site on something really small like a dedicated T1 (which is nothing in terms of web hosting!).

I can exclusively report that due to infrastructure problems created by moving the webserver beyond the length of the 5m network cable at ODP headquarters a new 'sneaker net' network has been implemented. The moving of the server was absolutely necessary as staff had threated to walk out if the 'ping' times on thier quake network were not improved.

This bleeding edge technology is based on 2 dozen members of staff equipped with the very latest in Nike technology transferring each TCP/IP packet (on a punch card) from one end of the data centre to the other from where it continues its journey via electronic means.

There have however been a number of issues with this technology - mainly the fact that at tea time there are only 6 members of staff available for packet transfer which necessitates the now regular posting of a "Please try back later" message.

Measures are being taken to improve the situation however and at this very moment 12 more ODP staff members are in intensive training and will soon be fitted with updated Nikes which should alleviate the problem.

Anyone who think that this is a joke (and it is) should appreciate that the fact that while not bad, it still isn't as good a joke as the ODP is becoming.
