Just too Sloooww

I think I've finally figured out why the DMOZ content has become so poor and why their list of editors has become so short.

Just try and do anything - ANYTHING on the DMOZ.org server.. it's impossible. I tried to submit a site 4 times in a row. The first time I received a server error, the rest of the times the server just timed out.

Given that the editor submission form does the same thing it's no wonder that people don't even both trying to become editors anymore.

The least they could do is have these forms working.

The part that makes me wonder is if Google (being their biggest user) has put any pressure on them to wake up. If it takes me 20 seconds on a dedicated T1 to load 1 page from the DMOZ.org site, just think how long it takes Google to crawl EVERY page on the site.. It must be why Google go an entire month without updates

Not sure if you're joking, but I'm pretty sure Google just takes an RDF dump and keeps a copy of the index locally.

If you are joking, this was my attempt to play straight-man. ;)

"I don't know Darrin, why *did* the chicken cross the road?"

i am certainly not joking. Google uses the RDF sump alright but they also crawl the entire ODP site, check this search out:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=site%3Admoz.org+dmoz

Of course I've taken the poll...

Send a message via ICQ to ettore
There's a major server and sw upgrade in course at Dmoz. Even editors have been asked to take a break from editing for the whole weekend.

You might also find some long-awaited features coming soon.
