Look at the very bottom of the category and it will either say:
"Volunteer to edit this category." or something like this if it has an editor: "Category editor: supermando" |

All categories have >200 who can edit in them. It will not be a reason a site is not listed.

Editors can make mistakes. I submitted one of my clients (retail store) to a category a couple times over a few years time and never got in. I thought it "must be one of my competitors". Finally got in contact with the editor and he told me my site was rejected twice because is was the same as another forum in the industry.
Well my client, a regular business did a lot of advertising on that forum, but was not connected to it in any other way...just one of the advertisers. So this was a mistake on the editors side. I let him know my side of things and I am waiting again to be added. |

Try the local angle
Getting into DMOZ depends a lot on if there is an editor with time in that particular cat. Although the edittails can cruise through...they are usaually very busy taking on large chunks of DMOZ and cleaning it up.
My suggestion is to try listing your site in the regional locality of your location. Many editors start in this area and are looking for sites to list in their designated areas. Good Luck |

I finally made it after 1.5 years!! I had given up hope when my editor application was rejected (twice), but my site is now there.
Another site I submitted last year was included in less than 2 months. Quote:

Congrats inertia1! I haven't been able to get my main site into DMOZ and it's been years!

Great that you got included, curious as to why your editor application was refused?

DMOZ is not buidling a directory as a listing service for webmasters. The only people who are complaining about DMOZ are webmasters who have some warped misunderstanding that DMOZ exists to provide some sort of submission processing and listing service for them. |

I can agree with this somewhat. DMOZ does affect rankings though and because of this it can stack the cards against the little guys sometimes. For the most part it seems quality will be rewarded...which is good...but I find it hard to believe that more hotly contested niches don't fall prey to some editors' best interests every once in awhile. People are people after all. The fact that webmasters and businesses are up in arms should probably be more of a Google issue as they put so much weight on DMOZ inclusion. |

I do not believe that Google does give extra weight to a DMOZ listing or if it does, its not much. Google aren't stupid - they do a lot of testing; if they do or do not give extra weight to a DMOZ listing they would have tested the overall global quality of the search results with and without that weighting. They will use or not use a certain amount of weighting of a DMOZ listing (or any other factor) based on the impact of that on the overall global quality of the search results. It does not matter what effect a DMOZ listing has on your or my site, its the impact on the overal quality of the results. Google will go with that; not with a lot of webmasters complaining! |

Wow this is a great thread.
At least two people have had their sites accepted in DMOZ. This is encouraging I submitted 3 sites in three radically different niches about 1.5 years ago and am still not listed I wonder if applying to be an editor has anything to do with you guys' success. Not that I am in anyway suggesting any hanky panky on dmoz part As affiliate marketers, we realize the importance of getting links in authority sites. And I cannot imagine a more authoritative site than Googles own directory source! |
