Dmoz
So the DMOZ submission form is unresponsive? You submit but nothing seems to happen, leaving you to wonder whether anything is actually going on behind the scenes or if the time you took to fill out the form was totally pointless? Its kind of like foreshadowing isnt it?

The submission/suggestion feature is turned off for some of the categories. Try making your suggestion to one the the subcategories, an editor will move it up if it belongs closer to the root.

And whats the point with this? Creating a larger backlog and more work for DMOZ editors. Seems to be better to get them to right place at once.
Edit: Thanks the info. sendig it to an higher category worked. Last edited by G_Gekko : November 21st, 2005 at 03:40 PM. |

LOL... I thought the exact same thing my first couple of years as an editor, but since gaining higher editing privileges I've come to understand the logic in this seeminly odd way of doing things. So since you ask, I'll take this opportunity to explain the reasoning. We have certain categories that get tons of missubmitted sites. Trying to load the unreviewed suggestions in these categories is next to impossible for any editor with dial-up internet. Plus, they tend to be closer to the category root, so only editors with higher editing privileges can work in those categories. This means that when an editor finally does go to work there, lots of time is spent sorting missubmitted sites down to the proper category. Then they sit and wait again for an editor to work in the category that the site should have been suggested to in the first place. Countless hours of editor time is spent sorting missubmitted sites. This is bad for editors as well as persons suggesting sites...it slows down the whole process. I'm only speaking for myself, but by the time I'm done sorting through a pool like that a lot of time has passed, much work has been done, but very little reviewing and listing actually happens. I'm either disgusted with the category or bored from lack of accomplishment so I take a quick look for guideline compliant titles and descriptions, then move on to something else. If a site is submitted/suggested to a subcategory that really belongs in its parent category it's no big deal. The editor that comes across it can move it to the proper place even if it's turned off to outside submissions. The editor will always have the access to do at least that. Another benefit of doing this is that an editor who has access to the subcategories often lacks access to the parent categories. This means an editor trying to build up a category will not be able to see the suggestions waiting in the categories closer to root even though it may contain sites that are listable in the subcategory rather than where it's sitting. We also have categories that are made to contain links to other categories but not websites. For an example of how this works see this category. Submissions are normally turned off for these categories as well. Hope this makes sense. Last edited by apost : November 21st, 2005 at 05:19 PM. |

That actually makes good sense ;.)
It doesn't however not make sense that the root categories I have been trying to submit to have been closed since they lack backlog. Or atleast i think so since you often can be entered into them within two weeks if you have a quality site. or is it a directory wide thing? |

Usually, there's already a huge backlog when this happens or it's a category that doesn't list sites anyway. |
