DMOZ Category question...

It seems that some of my competitors (the ones with the best SERPs, anyway) are listed under multiple DMOZ categories. For example, they are listed under "Home > Consumer Information > Automobiles" for the main page, and "Recreation > Autos > Makes and Models > Honda > Accord" for a Honda Accord review page.

I thought your site could only be listed under one category? Can I really get listed under different categories with different pages within the site?

It certainly seems to help them as far as Google is concerned.

Thanks,
Nate

I couldn't seem to find anything concrete... The rules they have posted seem to indicate that a site should belong to only one category, but that doesn't seem to be the actual practice.

Hello nutkeis,

I'm not 100% positive, but I think that like the search engines, DMOZ treats web pages as individual and not as a whole site.

I'm pretty sure that If you have content packed, relevant pages that you can get multiple listings.

Maybe someone can confirm this?

You can have more than 1 listing on DMOZ az long as the deep linked page has relevant content to the specific category.

As an editor I do not ignor new requests just because they are already listed in DMOZ but I check very carefully to see if the page that was sent is qualified for listing on its on.

To make things simple I will say that its much easier to get your first page listed than the second.

Multiple Listings of an URL

Most sites will fit perfectly into one category. ODP categories are specialized enough so that in most cases you should not list a site more than once. If a site offers many different things, it should be listed in a more general category as opposed to listing it many specialized subcategories. A site must be directly relevant to the scope of the category in which you are listing a site. Consult category charters to determine a category's topical scope. For example, if you have a site on US History covering the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the Presidents, you should not list it in each one of those subcategories, but rather list it in a general category such as Society/History/By_Region/North_America/United_States/

There are a few occasions in which a site could be listed in more than one category.

Sites that are relevant to a subject category and a specific local geographic area. Many sites can be listed once in a topical branch of the ODP, and once in the Regional category.
Sites aimed at people under 18 years of age may be listed once in the Kids and Teens Directory, and once in another topical area of the ODP.
Sites that have true research value and/or cover a number of different subjects across the directory to such a degree that one category isn't sufficient in describing the site's contents.
However, multiple listings should be the exception, not the rule. Editors should never delete a listing from a topical category simply because it is already listed in Regional. Likewise, editors should not delete listings from the classic version of the ODP because they also appear in Kids_and_Teens.

I posted a message on resource-zone.com to find out the status of a submission. When I had entered my site into a category and wasn't my priority I asked could I move it - they told me I didn't have to move it and that I should just submit it to the other categories.

So as as said above - if its relevant to a particular category I think they will allow you to put it into different categories.
