Dmoz...?
Hi
Im new here and wondered if anyone had any advice on how long it takes to get on DMOZ ? I've kept hearing that it is one of 'the places' to get listed on but I havent had any success... How often can you submit to these without breaking any rules (thats another thing that scares me about trying to promote a website - all the the things that search engines like/dont like) thanks Bill Last edited by cleveregg : April 10th, 2008 at 03:01 PM. |

From figures I came across a while back, of those that did get listed after submitted more than half were listed within 3 months of being suggested ....others wait years.
The role of a DMOZ editor is to build a category of useful resources. As DMOZ is not a listing service for webmasters, the editors role is not to process submissions. Editors are free to use whatever source they like to find new sites. Some do not even look at the pool of submitted sites, as its the worst source of new sites and is such an unproductive use of an editors time when trying to find good sites to add. Editors can use: 1) search engines 2) follow links from alreay listed sites 3) notice urls in print advertising 4) etc or any other source to find sites... ...as sush there is no such thing as "how long to get listed" As more than 50% of the sites that get listed in DMOZ were never submitted in the first place, so the average time for a listing, is probably 0 days. how do you check to see if you are listed on DMOZ? I submitted a few months ago.

Dmoz is interesting country. Being a Native, I will tell you that they are hardworking real people...that are all volunteers. There are a few ways to have a better chance of being listed in DMOZ in my opinion.
1st, follow the rules of application. It's not hard and it makes it easy for the editor to just list you instead of cleaning up your listing and then listing. 2nd...look at the bottom of the page of the cat. you want to list for, if there is an editor listed...you have a better chance. If there is no editor listed....it does not mean that there is not an editor assigned , but that the editor might have higher credentials. Keep clicking the back until you see an editor. The more back clicks, the more turf the editor has to cover. Lastly, look at two ways of listing your site....geographically and by specific cat. For example, you’re a tire store in Hartford. Look at the Shopping, tires cat and also look up business listing cat in Hartford. New Editors usually start out in small cats....like municipalities...they also are always looking to build their cats and would welcome the submission. That's my cents! |

I was finally listed on dmoz for the first time last week after around a 9 - 12 month wait, will be interesting to see what affect it has on my SERPS, however i've also paid for the yahoo directory submission a few days ago so ill hopefully benefit from both very soon......
I'd say dmoz is frustrating as hell, but just get your submission done and wait, move on to other SEO practices and forget about it, theres much more in other area's that can be done and no amount of complaining will get your listing done any quicker (believe me, i speak from experience!). From what ive read on this board (been a fan for a while, just never signed up before) dmoz seems to be losing its importance anyway so its not the be all and end all anymore. oh, and hi everyone! Regards, Mal |
