Death of Angel(DMOZ)
Hi all;
i have a intersting subject, but it's relevant with Google, it's too important issue for SEOs i think. The texts below copied from a forum about DMOZ. Anyone know about this issue? And will this issue does bad affect about Google SERP? ----> I've recently been accepted as a DMOZ editor, and have chatted with other editors about these problems. DMOZ is having serious issues. They tell me they've only one tech person to sort out the Search Engine problems and have not been able to resolve the problems. Rumors abound about other volunteers surfacing to try and fix it, but nothing has happened yet. ----> One thing that the Google rep. at the Dallas SES conference stressed was that Google gives no extra boost to a page with a DMOZ listing nor a Yahoo listing. You get the same benefit from those links as any other, according to the standard rules of the PageRank formula. ----> The latest opinion from some DMOZ editors with higher ranks than I is that the Search malfunction is "not important", what is important is the directory listings. I very strongly disagree with that, as my Disney Cruise Site is listed, but in a category so irrelevant to its main purpose, selling Disney Cruises, that no one browsing the ODP will ever find it. ----->

Good to get straight for those who unaware uyor, DMOZ has never gotten preferential treatment however because its dump is available to all (google for instance uses it) and many other smaller wannabe directories and mini dmoz's use its data for their own purposes thus when you get listed in DMOZ you dont just recieve the backlink from DMOZ and this is why the misconception "extra wieght" came along, when in fact it should be "extra links" as the eficiency of the DMOZ directory weins so to does the impotice for others to use it due to lack of quality or current data thus the added benefit of a dmoz listing is becoming less and less worth the headache and stress DMOZ syndrome can give you....Hmmm this might make a good article

DMOZ is, as far as I am concerned, a joke. I have tried and tried again to get my site listed in thier directory for well over a year. I submit very good descriptions and I submit it to the most relevant category. They have never listed my site. I may be biased
The interesting thing is that though the good editors at Dmoz have never listed my site nor responded to any of the three emails I sent to them, they denied my application to be an editor within about 15 minutes. I don't usually bitch but this has been a sore spot for me for a while. grrrr DmozI agree with SEO Guy. I most certainly is not worth the headache. |

Yes, resubmitting again and again seems to be the only reason why John's site has not been listed yet. Anyway, I agree that getting listed in Dmoz is really a hard slog

Hi!
An other thing is that google does not always use the listing as expected. I'm in /world/francais/jeux. (I was happy about it) If I search 'jeux' in google, it picks 'jeux de cartes' and an other one has a cathegorie. How about jeux?!! It's never used in any search containing the keyword 'jeux', what's the point to tease people with a unused cathegorie ? I'm happy about the link but it did not help me otherwise...LOL |

DMOZ has a forum where you can check your submission status at http://www.resource-zone.com/postli...t=&Board=status
This is especially important if you get errors submitting. To avoid errors you need to turn off any firewalls and antivirus protection (would you believe!) as they try to do some sort of fancy ip checking.

Hi All,
I have been patient with my submissions. After the first submission I waited over 6 months before I resubmited. I waited another 4 months after my second submission before i submitted for the third time. Its been close to five months since my last submission. is this something that is usually measured in years rather than months? Perhaps I will wait a little longer before I resubmit. Perhaps when I get dentures and start wearing Depends? hehehe Thanks for all the the help on this guys. That is why I love this forum. Now if I could only get my own forum to be as active and supportive as this one |

don't resubmit, check with the forum first to see how you are doing. You can check that once a month without annoying anyone.

John, Why... I mean, How can you blame a WHOLE organisation whens it's probably just the lacks of an editor among thousands, in a certain category. Oh, oh I have an idea, why don't you start your own human-edited directory with over 3.8 million sites, 58,906 editors and over 460,000 categories. Maybe then, you can all tell us how easy it is to control it, and to make sure that all the websites posted are being listed within a limited time. NOW THATS A JOKE.
you nincompoop. |

Steven,
Why you gotta' dis-respect me like that? Why would I ever want to do as you suggested? It makes no sense whatsoever. Seriously. My experience with Dmoz has led me to hold the opinion that I do. Why do you care as you do and why on God's earth would you rise so quickly to be Dmoz's champion. Proper spelling for organization is with a 'Z' and if you ever call me a name (even nincompoop) on this forum again I'll take a drive to Beauport and we can discuss it in person. Best Regards, John Allen |
