or you could even sign up to be an editor to make sure that part of DMOZ works as it should!

Oh, ok. that's the one bit that I thought was working ok. I applied 2x, first time to a tricky category and second time to a simpler category and had no problems getting through either time.

sarahk,

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had "volunteered" to be an editor. They (and I mean an actual person not an auto-reply) relied within 15 minutes to deny the application. Now please understand that the application was well written and the titles and short descriptions I provided for the three sites I had to "suggest" were very well written. I doubt if a seasoned Dmoz editor could have written a more descriptive yet un-biased title and brief description.

The part that has me upset with Dmoz is that while it is true that those editors are terribly overwhelmed and they do not have time to handle all of the submissions they receive, they are very quick to deny a volunteer who submited a well written application.

If they are so overwhelmed, then how can they respond so rapidly to deny an application. Perhaps they are not quite as busy as we might think.

There is a sub-category that has no editor which I volunteered to edit. There was one other site in this category. This Sub-Category is actually part to another "Sub-Category" which does not have an editor which is part of another category which also has no editor.

Common sense dictates that one would want to fill these categories with editors. It is not like I tried to edit a category with five editors and a thousand listings. I am, though some apparently dissagree, smart enough to start at the bottom where the chance of success is greatest.

If you are trying to edit the category in which you submitted your site to.. (many times as you say) Well, then the editors will notice, and they wont accept you, because theres an interest conflict.

Thats understandable and likely the reason my application was denied.
Quick question though...Wouldn't self-interest be the primary reason most people would volunteer to edit a category?
I am sure that is not the case with all editors but surely Dmoz recognizes that many editors only volunteer to improve thier owns site's standings in the search engines. Has anyone on this forum become an editor on Dmoz purely for humanitarian reasons without any self-serving interests? If ten people on this forum can honestly say they became an editor on Dmoz and were not motivated to do so by their own interests then I will eat crow and shut my mouth on this subject

I signed up for areas of interest that weren't in my professional arena so that I could better understand how it works from the inside.

The area that I'm in professionally is full of sharks and an editor is not there to be a moral watchdog so now, I'm glad I stayed away from it. I couldn't stand to list the sharks!

However, as a budding SEO specialist I've found the web is full of future clients!
