Yes - a shame, but true. I was a one-time editor, and quit, like a lot of people, because of the politics and cliquishness. DMOZ these days seems to be mostly dead. All the categories I've tried to post in recently have had no editor. Of course, a number of sites I manage have DMOZ links from "back in the day," and they still seem to carry weight. |

Yes, we still see a trickle on traffic from DMOZ listings. Nothing like it once was, but still steady. And our DMOZ listings still show up prominently when we search our backlinks. |

I wish I can say the same but... according to cbp our AMRAY Web Directory is not eligible because it's lacking "unique qualities" As an ex-editor can you tell me which "unique qualities" he is talking about? fastreplies |

Sure... in general, directory sites are rejected unless they have some specific editorial focus, site reviews, or other special qualities. In other words, if it's just "yet another directory site," it won't get listed. Sites with content crawled from other sites, sites with duplicate content, and other sites that exist only to generate traffic from search engines are also usually rejected. |

Thanks for reply but… I didn’t ask you about just another directory, I asked you about our directory. BTW, can you explain to me, what do you mean by “specific editorial focus”? And, can you give me an example of “other special qualities”? fastreplies |

I looked at your site, and it is "just another directory." There's nothing to distinguish it from any of the hundreds or thousands of free web directories. Distinguishing factors might include editorial focus (a directory of medical sites), added information (editor reviews of sites), some unique presentation (a map showing site relationships), etc. The original function of DMOZ was to help users find useful sites, not just provide link juice for anyone who builds a website. |

fastreplies: if you spent half the time you spend moaning about DMOZ on improving your own directory you might stand a chance of having it included.
So, the DMOZ category isn't currently up to your high expectations? Well you have two choices: a) accept it, or b) apply to become an editor and actually do something about it rather than complaining. And yes, your site offers nothing that I can see above and beyond what hundreds of thousands of other free directories offer. Although DMOZ may frustrate you, it is at least of a high enough quality in general that you appear desperate to list your site in it. Your directory on the other hand ... well I for one wouldn't trouble myself by submitting a site to it. If you can't see why your directory offers nothing unique, I do worry for the success of your site long term. I'd also like to add that it comes as little surprise that no volunteers are rushing to look after that DMOZ category -- I can only begin to imagine the vast numbers of poor quality directories awaiting review in that cat. It's going to be far more than any one person could achieve in their spare time. I imagine that it would take a team of people weeks/months to go through it, all the while other cats suffer from lack of attention. You only have to glance at the "Directory Announcements" forum at DP to get an idea of just how many new directories are created every day, week after week, month after month using the exact same script as yours, using the exact same category layout as yours, and offering nothing more and nothing less than yours.

@JagNet
Are you trolling me? Because if you aren’t, then it seems to me you are telling us that you have no idea what separates good directory from just another directory as if for you car is just another car with 4 wheels and motor and that Bens, Jag or Bentley is not any better than Yugo. Sorry, but I cannot accept statements you made above seriously because I’m sure you know better than that. I can expect something like that from cbp but not from you. Please tell me that you’re trolling me. fastreplies Last edited by fastreplies : March 31st, 2009 at 01:48 PM. |
