what should i do? help plz

    Hi,

We have an ecommerce website that sells pottery products.

Since our website is kinda old and it does not have https and its theme is not very good, and it has good traffic, we don't wanna take the risk of changing the theme or adding https to it. I know it can be done but we don't wanna take the risk!

I was just wondering is it a good idea to make a new website? I mean we're not gonna use the same content in the new one.

Some people say it's a good idea but others say that both websites will compete with each other in google or something! This is kinda true but we are not gonna post in the old one anymore.

So now I really don't know what to do!
    Advice pls!

    Changing the actual site

+ you keep domain authority and costumers
    + Better UX and UI
    + Better loading speed (PHP7 HTTP2, etc...)
    - Have to take your site offline when switching
    - you might experience a short and small drop in traffic

    Building a new site

    + Better UX and UI
    + Better loading speed (PHP7 HTTP2, etc...)
    - Have to build a new audience
    - Risk of SERP folding and duplicate content
    - Have to rebuild authority

If I were you I'd develop the new site on a second server making sure you maintain your best ranking pages url structure, prepare all 301 redirections, back up all products, orders, costumers, and all relevent data, When ready take down your site. reconfigure server for speed, set copy the new site on the server, add your 301 redirections, launch the new site. Make sure all your costumer data is up to date on the new site.

If you decide to redisign on the same domain, go for https at the same time.

If your getting good traffic on your old site why change things? Meaning why are you asking this question?

you're totally right! but i'm afraid i change my theme and move to https and i lose my rank in google and lose my visitors! it would be great if i can make the changes on the old one and would still have my rank and traffic!
im going to change my theme because it's not very good theme for an online shop. and it does not have https.

Why do you think it's not a very good theme, if everything is working and your getting good traffic, it seems to be fine. I never mess with stuff that's working well.

Because 3 years ago when we lunched the website we kinda didnt know much about themes, and we used the theme "goodnews" for an e-commerce website, which is a blog theme actually, and now we wanna change it with destino theme which is an e commerce theme.

Try this, it can help you migrate the site correctly. This should let you fix any url errors you may incur in the migration.

    Edited to add.......

Be sure and make two backups of the site, including the database as well !

If you're unsure of things and you're running an eCommerce business it definitely sounds like a project for a proper web company to take care of.

They deal with site migrations all the time and can make the whole thing go smoothly without any drop in rankings/traffic.

    You have mis-understood my post.

IF you migrate to a new theme and if your old urls were to change because of the theme, with that plugin you could re-write them back to their originals.

Generally speaking changing a theme only who have no effects on your rankings as most of the data is actually included in the DB.
But you need to make sure that the theme is SEO optimized. (only one H1 tag in the right spot, etc...)
It would only have an influence on your User experience and your conversion rates.

Changing to https though would have a negative impact on your rankings in the short term and would not provide a noticeable increase in future rankings, it will mainly influence user experience and confidence in your site.

Are you a web developer? If not you should find one, not knowing what your doing could cause you to crash and burn.
