Using (completely) different domains for different language > OK for SEO?

    Hi,
I have researched the argument but not found any satisfactory answer to this question, so I'm asking for advice.

In a new website, is it OK for SEO to use two different domains:
    - one for domestic users, in italian (i.e mangiamele.it)
    - one for international users, in english (i.e. eatapples.com)
where the second redirects (301) to the first (mangiamele.it/en)

Looks like a bad idea to me (confuses users, no SEO benefits, complicates SEO work etc)

    But perhaps it is not.
Could you please give me some advice and rationals?

    Many thanks

The english domain is a waste of time if all it does is redirects, its never going to attract links as anyone sharing a link would share the final destination.

The only reason someone would build a structure like this is to build lots of spammy links to the dummy domain and once its caught to take away the redirect leaving the money site clean.

    Thanks cheddars

    What I don't fully get:
    - is that double domain negative or neutral for SEO?
    - in the spammy scheme you mentioned isn't the "good" domain (the .it in our case) attracting negative reputation from the bad/spammy/fake ones?

    Many thanks

It is yes but the way people do it is remove the redirect once caught leaving the money site clean as the connection is broken.
At least that's the theory behind the tactic..
Often subdomains are used as there is no limit to the number of subdomains you can have. In that setup the sub domain links to the money domain passing link juice.
If caught the sub domain is deleted which then cleans up the money sites backlinks profile.

Many sites have done this and been caught and these high ranking sites suddenly can't be found as google jump in and manually remove the money site.
It's risky and if you care if your site will be around in years to come then it's not a route you should look at.
