    Subdomain or Subfolder

I'm currently splitting my website into two main sections and I'm wondering which would be better for SEO, to have the sections in the Subdomain or Subfolder?

In example: to have section1. domain. com / section2 . domain. com OR domain. com/section1 / domain. com/section2

i would use my main domain (domain. com) to link to the best content of both those sections.

If all the content is relevant to main theme of the site go with folders. If not go with subdomains.

This is old school I know, but I am still doing it this way.

I'm sorry but that doesn't really answer my question..

Even though I'd like to use subdomains more the subfolders, I'd like to know if it makes any difference to google?

For example, if I'm targeting keyword1 would keyword1. domain. com rank better than domain. com/keyword1?

Both sections content fits the niche but its completely different type of content.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the SEO benefit per se but think about what makes sense and do that. Chances are this will be the correct answer for SEO too.

    For instance:

If all the content is about recipes and you are talking about splitting into vegetarian and non-vegetarian I would go with one site with folders. The whole site will be 'relevant' to its content.

If you are talking about one section about recipes and the other section about astro-navigation I would go the sub-domain route and in effect have two websites - each of which only contains relevant content.

In this way your 'signals' to the search engines about the content of each site are consistent. May help the SEO. May not. Probably only in a very small way; BUT may be easier to administer and be more user friendly for users since there is likely to be less chance of non-relevant links getting in the way of your message.

Of course; there will be lots of shades of gray to this since you could have a site that is all about the history of magazine articles and has some links to recipes and some to astro-navigation; in which case one site with sub-folders would be more likely the better choice. Think USER first, then worry about the SEO.
