    ScrubTheWeb closed

Yesterday I went to ScrubTheWeb only to discover that they shutdown their engine and put their domain up for sale. That disappoints me; it actually wasn't a bad search engine, and it had been around for 20+ years.

    That's kind of sad.

I actually used their engine regularly til last year when they started to require JavaScript. I still used it occasionally when Google wouldn't provide interesting results on topics I looked up. I know there are some good websites I won't be able to find again because they aren't popular. The next oldest still operating engine I know of is WhatUSeek, but they only index a few keywords from sites which pay to be in their directory. (I'm not including Google.)Small engines have seen a major decrease in traffic in the past 2-3 years. Anyone know why?

The website will go down on June 18, according to their META description. Their paying customers will receive support until their accounts run out. There is no way to sigh up for a new paying account; there is no way to renew an account.

Looks like they've sold their domain name; the link to the domain marketplace is gone.

Ran a search for the domain marketplace to check this. The domain name's still listed as for sale. Don't know why it's no longer linked from their main page.

Here's an article I wrote about ScrubTheWeb, remove the spaces and copy it to your browser's address bar if you want to read it.

It looks like someone bought the domain name. There's a generic server page there now. As long as the new owners don't add a robot.txt file which blocks the Internet Archive...
