    Question about hreflang tag

    I am trying to avoid any duplicate content issues so I am implementing hreflang tags into my webpage. But I have a question:

    Here are the current countries we are targeting with the British English translation of our website:

    United Kingdom
    Ireland
    Australia
    New Zealand
    South Africa
    Hong Kong
    Singapore

    The default page is:

    href="http://www.example.com/

    the other related page is:

    href="http://www.example.com/gb/

    Is this the right code to put in the head for the default page?:

    Note: in the first line I used en not en-us

    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/ " hreflang="en" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en-gb" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/" hreflang="en-ie" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en-nz" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en-za" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en-hk" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en-sg" />

    Any help would be appreciated

    why are you targeting all english speaking languages to the GB page ?
    The idea of hreflang is to show alternate languages or translations of the same content but if your using the same page I struggle to see the point.
    So for example /fr would be french
    Its perfectly acceptable to have different pages for GB and US as spelling are often different although both are english.

    So because there are 2 different variations of Example Domain

    Example Domain (English US) and http://www.example.com/gb/ (English GB)

    I am thinking add:

    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/ " hreflang="en" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en-gb" />

    to the head of Example Domain

    and not worry about targeting specific areas like:

    United Kingdom
    Ireland
    Australia
    New Zealand
    South Africa
    Hong Kong
    Singapore

    and for http://www.example.com/gb/

    add:

    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/gb/ " hreflang="en" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://www.example.com/ " hreflang="en-us" />

    Please note I used hreflang="en" because I am referencing the default version in each of the above href implemetations.

    you are thinking about this all wrong IMHO

    when you have a bunch of pages that are the same but in different languages thats when you use hreflang

    You dont use it for geo targeting countries.
