    Multilingual website vs. multiple websites

Hi everybody and thanks in advance for your help!
I have a tricky question regarding a multilingual website.

One of my clients has a example.com-website targeting the US- and Canadian market. Now they want to expand and target other markets like Australia.
Therefore I bought other domains such as example.com.au.

Now I want to set up a new website for Australia but it's more like a copy of the original one because 95% of the content is identical.
For this reason I'll add href-language-tags as well as canonical-tags for the duplicated pages so everything should be fine for Google and co.

    And now the actual question:
Will the Australian .com.au-website rank before or after the .com-domain or in other words: will Google prefer the Australian-website because of it's regional domain although most of the content is a duplicate?
I know there are many other factors like the domain age etc., but if you would exclude everything else...

    Best regards
    Robin

A .com site would be sufficient, no need for a new domain, twice the work and headaches
    What industry are you targeting?

Yes for a local identity, is this woodworking site doing business in that locality?
Still the dot com will do the job, you'd be better of adding content about the area you want to target.

Thank you for your feedback so far!

There will be also a chinese version of the website. Does that change anything?
The company doesn't sell products directly to their clients. It acts more than an intermediary.

    Best regards
