    Question mismatched cononical

    Thanks Cheddar for the page explorer tool, found it really useful. I got these first results;
    https://1drv.ms/i/s!ArR4n1rbIjTYqn4TDrgaZr5kW_kZ
    then after deleting quite a bit;
    https://1drv.ms/i/s!ArR4n1rbIjTYqn9x2uQpMU1ah5wH
    though still not happy with speed.
    I do have a question, one error was that I had a mismatched cononical. How can I fix that?
    thanks.

    For the speed aspect try:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-super-cache/

    Not sure about the mismatched canonical though - hopefully Chedders will pick this up, when Skype comes back online i'll send him this thread.

    Thanks for info. Just another question, is it normal for google to reduce your sites rank after making improvements? I fixed most of the issues with large images, alt tags etc and thought my sites rank would increase but actually it went down. Have not tackled the speed issue yet.

    Any changes to the pages can result in rank fluctuations, (particularly adding/removing links).
    I don't see any canonical errors/weaknesses; all versions redirect successfully to https://www.website.
    If you still see this, can you tell us which url it relates to?

    I had over 140 links on the page so reduced those to about 50, I would say 95% where all internal links to different US state pages. So that could be the reason.

    Normally the miss match is due to no forward slash on the end or not a absolute address being used.
    I see many people using for example /home.htm as their canonical tag which of course it requires the full path. If you copy the address from a browser address bar with copy and paste that is how it should appear.

    Hope that helps

    To be fair its a tricky one.
    I am sure google know that a domain name with and without the forwards slash refer to the same page so I would not expect it to help much either way. All the tool is doing is reporting on what it technically should be but its your call if you wish to take notice of it. Personally I like to get all the boxes ticked and not rely on google second guessing what I mean.

    Once you have finished with my tool you may want to use GTMetrix which will give you some areas to look at regarding speed issues. Alternatively you can use a free version of cloudflare which will cache a lot of your pages and can drastically help with speed issues. That hyas the added bonus of also giving you free HTTPS if your not already secure and DDOS protection.

    Was looking at free version of cloudflare, I had used them in the past however was having a number of issues with https on my site with their free certificate. To be fair I'm not sure they were the cause. But anyway I just handed over $70 to godaddy for a real certificate and all my issues disappeared. But now I need to go back to a CDN so I am wondering if I can use that $70 certificate on their free CDN version? or have I wasted my money!

    If your using wordpress they have their own plugin which helps a lot in getting g things setup right.
    If not you can also use a rule to convert everything http to https within the cloudflare setup. It basically mean you have little to no on site changes.
